Della loves Jim so deeply that she believes he deserves something rare and expensive, her love becomes her motivation to find him the best gift. Finally, with only one dollar and eighty-seven cents, Della cannot afford a gift worthy of Jim. Della then makes the ultimate sacrifice when she cuts her long, beautiful hair. "It's sold, I tell you – sold and gone, too.. Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered … but nobody could ever count my love for you” (292). Della calls her love uncountable, it is limitless, unlike her precious hair.
