I am co-president of the MSUM Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) group on campus. This group is a great way for students to get involved and to raise awareness about cancer. AS a group we put on 2-4 events throughout the year to raise cancer awareness and money for cancer research. For example, this fall I planned and put on a “Knockout Cancer!” event with the Wellness Center on campus. This event was a free kickboxing class where students can get a good workout in while hanging out with friends and donating to a great cause. CAC’s main event is the Moorhead Colleges Relay for Life that we …show more content…
As a Dragon Ambassador I am an official student representative of MSUM. I give tours to prospective students and their families, as well as prospective faculty. Because of this job, I have made so many new connections with other MSUM students and faculty members. I have also learned the ins and outs of MSUM by being trained to give tours of our beautiful campus. This leadership position is one that I take great pride in. I love being able to tell others about why I love MSUM and how MSUM can help shape their future in the most positive ways!
Describe volunteer experiences you have had in the past 2 years and how many hours you volunteered in each organization:
I have volunteered through multiple different organizations both on and off the MSUM campus. One of the major groups that I work with is the Down Syndrome Foundation Camp (DSF). This coming summer will be my 3rd summer as a volunteer camp counselor at Camp Knutson, where the DSF camp is held. I have learned so much about working with people with disabilities by working with the campers. I was also fortunate to work with a phenomenal camp staff who taught me so much about how to work with people with disabilities. Over the past two summers I have volunteered a total of 640 hours at camp. I cannot wait to return to my favorite place in the world and work with the most amazing people this coming …show more content…
Special education is a growing field and needs all of the help it can get. Something that sets me apart from other education majors is my experience working with children and adults with special needs. I am extremely passionate about special education because I have a special connection with the special education community and have many friends dear to my heart that require special education.
Over the summer I volunteer at a camp for people with special needs called Camp Knutson. I was a volunteer counselor at the Down Syndrome Camp. This camp has completely changed my life and also affirmed for me that special education, and working with the special education community, is something that I want to pursue as a career. Also over the summer, I worked as a PAC (personal care assistant) for two adults with HFA (High Functioning Autism). Working as a PAC not only gave me the amazing experience of how to work with adults with HFA, but allowed me to make great connections with them and their families. I got to learn about the special education from the family’s point of view, which I think is a very important perspective to learn as a future special educator. This scholarship would greatly aide my passion for learning more about special
