The group I will be focusing my research on for this paper is MS-13. We have all heard about this notorious street gang before, Most have heard about them on the news because of some of their horrible killings they have committed and other crimes they have been apart of. What once started as a small gang to protect themselves from the other gangs in the community, turned into one of the most violent and criminal organized gang in the country?
After the Central American silver war was over in the 1980’s, many Salvadorians immigrated to the United States. Most of the immigrants migrated to Los Angeles, California and few immigrated to Washington D.C. This would be a huge benefit to the MS and would give them more protection in the barrios with other Latin gangs. For the act of the Mexican mafia taking the MS under their wing, MS had to return the favor to the mafia and be their hit men. This is when they became MS-13, the 13 was added because they were now apart of “the M” which is also know as the Mexican mafia. M is the 13th letter of the alphabet and that’s why the Mexican mafia uses the number 13. After the alliance between the MS-13 and the Mexican mafia, MS-13 has grown so much that the FBI believes that they spread over forty-two states in the United Sates and they believe they have approximately fifty thousand members worldwide. MS-13 started to gain a name out in the streets of Los Angeles, they began to take part in any criminal activity that was offered to them. MS-13 was soon known as one of the most dangerous and powerful gangs in Los Angeles. The United State then started to crack down on immigration laws and started to send back immigrants to their country that were committing crimes or had a record. They like to wear jerseys with their colors and have the number 13 to show that they are part of the MS-13 and the also like to use the numbers 67 or 76 because adding 6 and 7 equals 13. Most MS-13 gang members have their body heavily filled with tattoos. One of the most common tattoos that they get on their body is the MS, the number 13 and some get it in roman numerals (XIII), they also get the word “salvatrucha” and other get the devil hors as well as well as their cliques name. many new MS-13 members and no longer getting heavily tattooed like they used to before because they don’t want law enforcement to recognize they are part of MS-13. Some of the hang sighs that the will through up are the 1 and 3 with their fingers, they also use the rock on hang sighn( pinky and index finger up with weeding finger, middle finger and thumb down) that they know as the devils head, and if you turn it upside down it look like a
