MN Reflective Essay

Although I only had a short amount of time to work with MN, I feel as though my care plan and expectations of the client were realistic and beneficial. I had never before worked with someone who was deemed palliative and who was going through a significant period of transition in their life, so it was very valuable for me to be able to look at the many ways in which it impacts an individual. I believe that during my time with MN we shared similar beliefs and values making it effortless to implement goals and objectives, while in turn, having her agree and be motivated to make changes in regards to her priority health issue.
If I had the chance to work with MN again, I would be interested in spending more time talking to her about her mental health, as there are many emotions that come along with a palliative diagnosis. I noticed in MN’s chart that she had a history of depression, however, I did not explore this much,

This initiative was regarding changing MN’s PRN opioid analgesic to part of her scheduled medication regime. Having the PRN switched to a scheduled medication would be beneficial in order to maximize the therapeutic effect of the drug and ideally keep her pain at a less than 3/10 on the 0-10 scale. Going forward, I will more actively pursue this initiative in regards to any physicians alert initiated by myself. This will ensure I am meeting best practice and effectively evaluating the client outcomes of my clients throughout their hospital stay.
I found this DM to impact my learning greatly. Throughout the CTKTC and DM process it became evident to me that I have a good foundation in gathering objective data, however, I need to go into greater depth with my subjective assessments, especially surrounding mental health. Overall, my experience with MN was beneficial as it made me aware of my strengths and also allowed me to reflect upon my weaknesses in the practice

How can the nurse help Jackie and Sean come to terms with the inevitable outcome for Kristina? When discussing devastating outcomes, such as Kristina’s prognosis, it is critical for all healthcare providers to frequently and sensitively present the information using honest and simple terminology. The nurses should assist in facilitating multiple multidisciplinary collaborations to promote understanding and acceptance. Due to Sean and Jackie’s difficulty understanding Kristina’s poor prognosis, and inevitable outcome, it would be advantageous of the nurse to encourage multiple discussions. According to Crozier and Hancock (2012), repetition and multiple meetings may be needed in order for families to fully understand difficult information and furthermore make decisions for their loved ones.…

I left high school tired and confused. Having my whole life desired one thing and pursued one love – a love for the art and science of literature, for inkblots on bare paper, for the destruction of the pristine with the flawed beauty of the written word – I was wasted, rendered exhausted by the pressures under which I forced myself to toil for four long years. I had lost my way, stumbling off a path I once knew so well, weighed down by my wide array of interests, terrified to commit to one and be glued to it, riddled with regret, for the rest of my life. Feeling trapped, I regarded the list of schools to which I had been accepted, selected one I believed covered all bases, and, throwing up my hands, I entered undeclared.…

Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

I am coming to understand more and more the difference in care that is required for a client who focus of care is palliative compared to someone who health focus is maintenance of illness or cure of illness or injury. In my practice experience at KBRH I have had the opportunity to care for both palliative and non-palliative clients and not only recognize the shift in care, but the understanding around the different types of care. Particularly in the shift to palliative. For example where pain medications are given in greater dose and longer term without concern for addiction or tolerance, or where family may need more care and teaching than the clients, particularly at the end.…

    Palliative Patients

Introduction The United States Department of Health and Human services reports that more than one third of all deaths occur in the hospital setting (2011). However, most patients who die in the hospital setting do not receive palliative care (Imhof, Kaskie, & Wyatt, 2007). In their 2007 article “Finding the way to a better death: an evaluation of palliative care referral tools” Imhof, Kaskie and Wyatt assert that palliative care allows patients to experience a good death; a death in which pain and symptoms are better managed, and patients receive the emotional, spiritual and psychological support necessary to experience dignified life closure. They also argue that nurses are in the prime position to make palliative care referrals because…
