One of the field where the quality cannot be compromised having certain percentage of deficiency is the healthcare sector. Even a .01% of defective in this field can be risky and the cause may also be loss of life. But mid staff scandal was so shocking for me since the poor quality has led to a very high mortality rate.
This article brings out to light the poor quality of Stafford hospital, a small district general hospital in Staffordshire. It is named as mid staff scandal since the hospital is and run by mid Staffordshire NHS hospital trust. The scandal is that there has been an estimated death of 400-1200 from Jan 2005 to Mar 2009. But the real darkness came out only in the mid of 2007, when there was a really notable amount of death. That is when the Health Care Commission (HCC) came into this problem as the hospital gave an unconvincing reason of safety alert failure for the increase mortality rate. The HCC told a team to investigate on this issue and bring out the cause for the high numbers. A victim of this scandal named Julie Bailey, who lost her mother, played an important role in bringing out this scandal. It is she who found out that there was something going wrong there and formed a campaign group named “cure the NHS” requiring a public inquiry on this issue.
The issue then became serious and Francis, who is the chair of the investigation team, started collecting evidence from 2010. He expected to report the complete nature of the problem by 2011. But once he started collecting data, the issue was taking a broader path and was involving lot more of in depth analysis. As a collective finding, the main reason behind this was improper patient care.
