MATHCOUNTS: Middle School Math Competition

Decent Essays
MATHCOUNTS is a middle school math competition that I participated in and without a doubt it was one of the best experiences in my life. I made new friends, had a lot of laughs, and found a community where I belonged. When I started high school, I decided I would be a student coach for the school MATHCOUNTS team. I wanted them all to have the same positive experience I had. But there were only 10 students interested and only a handful of coaches. Despite the small numbers, we still tried to teach them as much as we could. Students who loved or struggled with math were all welcome. We’d give them practice problems, lectures on new math topics, and had some friendly competition. Not only did we prepare them for MATHCOUNTS, but we also prepared

On November 17th, my friend and I observed a musical at Carroll University called Numbers Nerds presented by the Carroll players. The musical is about a Waukesha high school competitive math team who received second place in their state competition due to their team captain getting stage freight. However, one of their competitors cheated on a problem and the Waukesha team was able to progress to nationals in New York. Although the play consists of a lot of disagreements between the main characters, they do grow as individuals and in the end, become friends once again.…

When I was in Sixth grade, I was a part of the interscholastic academic pentathlon. In this competition we had trivia questions and both team and solo work. I remember we would have study groups and random sessions with the coaches to study together and to get used to what we were really in for. We met every Wednesday after school to study, we used tests and questions from past years to get the best feel for what we were going into so we wouldn’t go into the competition and be blindsided by everyone who was actually prepared and took the time to be ready when the big day came. I used the tools the school gave me like guided access to the library and computers including textbooks and websites that aren’t traditionally introduced to my grade…

While all students deserve to be treated equally, part of that equality is that they all have a fair shot at receiving a quality education. In my future classroom, I plan to work closely with my struggling students and to utilize strategies such as those presented in this reading. In general, mathematics is a difficult subject to grasp and can be made even more challenging due a language barrier or a fear of speaking up. Strategies, such as those highlighted in this reading, are needed to help all students to achieve their…

In the fall and spring, Veterans Memorial Middle School hosts an after-school instructional extension program, for its students. By providing the educationally motivated students with high school tutors, the students are able to, therefore, obtain an enhanced understanding of the subjects that they struggle with. The facilitator of this program, an English teacher of the eighth grade, diligently focuses on properly and sternly teaching the children, without a moment’s rest, while maintaining an exceptionally positive demeanor.…

Being in a math team sounds boring and stressful, but I gained knowledge through the different math activities they provided. I gained a lot of math skills from participating in math madness and AMC.This showed me that math was not just deriving and integrating, but math was an application of those skills. Outside of school, I volunteer at Pomona Valley Medical Hospital Center, Volunteens, and Hwarang Leo Club. Pomona Valley Medical Hospital Center took me a step closer to my dreams. Throughout middle school, I was always asked the question “What do you want to do when you grow up?”…

    Math Challenge

This math challenge was easy to approach, because I realized that the lines O1O, O1O2, and O2O1, form a triangle, I realized that if that triangle was a right triangle I could find the distance between O1, and O. To prove that triangle OO1O2 is a right triangle I used the radii of O1, I realized that the sides of triangle PO1Q, O1P, and O1Q, are radii, and therefore they are equal. Since they are equal, the triangle PO1Q, is an isosceles triangle. In an isosceles triangle the base angles are congruent , so that means that angle Q is equal to angle P, since angle Q is 45 degrees, angle P is also 45, and because a triangle has 180 degrees, the remaining angle(O1) must be 90 degrees. This proves that the triangle PO1Q, is a right triangle, and…

Students who do not establish a solid foundation in mathematical concepts often carry these conceptual deficiencies into middle and high school (Nelson, 2014). Little (2009) noted that deficiencies in mathematical concepts usually emerge in elementary school “and continue as students’ progress through secondary school, typically performing over two grade levels behind their peers” (p. 3). Little attributed this phenomenon to poor mathematical instruction that covers too wide a scope of skills and concepts, causing the students to be unable “to achieve a sufficient conceptual understanding of the core concepts that underlie operations and algorithms” (p.3). Conceptual understanding is necessary for problem solving, and students are unable to be academically successful in mathematics without these…

By incorporating and activating their background knowledge, math became a concept that they could understand through real life experiences. For example, I inquired about the number of wheels on a car. The students understood that each car had four wheels. I gradually went up to multiple cars in order to find how many wheels six car would have. The students were able to understand the concept of repeated addition (multiplication) through a discussion of an object that they were familiar with easier than reading a constructed word problem and…

Many of the students in my 8th Grade Math class, and all math classes at Edna Brewer Middle School enter with different experiences, biases, levels of understanding, mathematical strategies toolkits, and skill sets. My current 8th grade classroom is a perfect example of that. I have students who have an understanding of previously taught mathematical concepts, number sense, and can connect that previous learning to what is expected of students to learn in 8th grade. Although, I also have students who have struggled, had different life experiences, and did not access those same previously taught mathematical concepts. So how can I now as a new teacher at Edna Brewer Middle School and their 8th Grade Math Teacher, close the gap that my students already have when they enter my classroom?…

Maths and many of its aspect are a major part of everyday life. Literacy and numeracy are essential skills for all children to develop. Every child has different learning ability and therefore it will be a good idea to determine each child’s maths literacy level for them to succeed. The two theories of learning discussed are Behaviorism and Constructivism. According to the theory constructivism is best suited to the learning and teaching of maths over behaviorism.…
