It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

Initially, I came into my undergraduate studies at St. Ambrose University looking to become an Occupational Therapist, but that goal changed once I began my undergraduate coursework. Towards the end of a semester of research methods, I became fascinated with statistics and the process of research. In biopsychology classes, I learned how wonderful and sometimes cruel the human mind could be. Occupational Therapy suddenly seemed less interesting and I began to look more seriously at pursuing a different path, more in line with the amazing things I was learning about psychology, research, and the brain.…

As a junior, majoring in Biochemistry with a concentration in Psychology, I believe the clinical internship is an ideal blend of my past academic, laboratory and extracurricular experiences. As an undergraduate research assistant at the Champagne Laboratory, which specializes in psychobiology, epigenetics and neuroscience, I’ve independently studied the gene expression and methylation profile of adult mice exposed to early-life maternal separation. In choosing the depression and anxiety target genes for my study, I’ve been exposed to a wealth of literature on anxiety and mood disorders. My experience studying the influence of nonoptimal early environments on the developing brain and later symptomatology of depression and anxiety has sparked an interest in pursuing a career in the molecular biology of psychiatric disorders.…
