Using Colors to Express Voice
On November 7th, 2015 my first year seminar class took a field trip to the MASS MoCA Museum of Contemporary Art in Massachusetts. We traveled approximately an hour away by bus to visit the museum. MASS MoCA is known for its outstanding modern art and has an attendance of 120,000 people per year. Most of the museum was inside but there were some outside exhibits. The museum was made up of three floors and had a gallery for kids, and a cafe where a live band performed. There were many works of arts through the museum that caught my attention, some more intriguing than others. Many walls were covered in bright patterns and colors, while others were just black and white. I liked the exhibit because the wall painting were huge and every single one was different. Even though they were unique, I think the museum included too many wall painting in the exhibit because after awhile they got boring to look at. Wall painting 901 specifically had many colorful vertical running up and down the wall. It also had a huge black, irregular blob in the center of the wall, overlapping the colorful bands in the background. The black blob represents a group of colored maids in Jackson, Mississippi including Aibileen and Minny. They were granted an opportunity with Skeeter, a white women, to help expose their stories and the truth behind what it 's like to be a colored maid in the South. Skeeter grew up her whole life surrounded by people from the colored lines and realized how unjust the maids were treated. She took the initiative to start the black blob and encouraged the maids to tell their stories to have their voices heard. Like the black blob, Skeeter and the colored maids went against society rule, and chose to be different in order to try and make a change to benefit the black race. Unlike the colored vertical stripes, the blob went out of its boundaries and chose not follow the same pattern as the background. For many years African Americans had their voices silenced by society. The colored maids willing decided to work with Skeeter on her book to raise awareness of segregation in the South. Similar to the black blob, these women used their voice to speak out and catch the attention of differences the blacks
