Using Colors to Express Voice
On November 7th, 2015 my first year seminar class took a field trip to the MASS MoCA Museum of Contemporary Art in Massachusetts. We traveled approximately an hour away by bus to visit the museum. MASS MoCA is known for its outstanding modern art and has an attendance of 120,000 people per year. Most of the museum was inside but there were some outside exhibits. The museum was made up of three floors and had a gallery for kids, and a cafe where a live band performed. There were many works of arts through the museum that caught my attention, some more intriguing than others. Wall painting 901 was one work of art from the museum that connects to the theme Voice, and the novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett because

Many walls were covered in bright patterns and colors, while others were just black and white. I liked the exhibit because the wall painting were huge and every single one was different. Even though they were unique, I think the museum included too many wall painting in the exhibit because after awhile they got boring to look at. Wall painting 901 specifically had many colorful vertical running up and down the wall. It also had a huge black, irregular blob in the center of the wall, overlapping the colorful bands in the background. Unlike the other wall paintings, this specific one stood out to me and made me wonder why the artist included the black blob over the …show more content…
The black blob represents a group of colored maids in Jackson, Mississippi including Aibileen and Minny. They were granted an opportunity with Skeeter, a white women, to help expose their stories and the truth behind what it 's like to be a colored maid in the South. Skeeter grew up her whole life surrounded by people from the colored lines and realized how unjust the maids were treated. She took the initiative to start the black blob and encouraged the maids to tell their stories to have their voices heard. Like the black blob, Skeeter and the colored maids went against society rule, and chose to be different in order to try and make a change to benefit the black race. Unlike the colored vertical stripes, the blob went out of its boundaries and chose not follow the same pattern as the background. For many years African Americans had their voices silenced by society. The colored maids willing decided to work with Skeeter on her book to raise awareness of segregation in the South. Similar to the black blob, these women used their voice to speak out and catch the attention of differences the blacks

The art is interesting for the facts that the people who made the art pieces put a lot of dedication and time in wanting to make them look great. The first section in the exhibition is the Art and Action which is all about artifacts of how people who made them went far beyond the boundaries to make a statement through their creativeness. The next couple of sections were the Art and Knowledge and the Art and Power. The art work in the Art and power section had a couple figures that were a bit scary it was darker than any of the other sections and you just felt that the art pieces…

When I went recently, for the first time, went to the Texas Tech Museum I noticed that the museum had numerous of things in it such as dinosaurs, visuals for the Native Americans, Chinese artifacts, paintings and etc. Even though they had a lot to offer I just paid close attention to the paintings. Fortunately, upon entering the Dallas Museum of Art on October 11, 2016, I was greeted with quite the opposite. I entered through the side with the large art mural. The mural seemed a beautiful mosaic that reminded me a lot of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Entering the building I was greeted by a large ascending staircase and…

I went to the St Louis Art Museum and after attending I believe that I do have a better understanding of the artwork. All the art pieces were spread out through the art museum. They had spaces dedicated to old fashion, furniture sets and a site-specific art piece that Andy Goldsworthy did for the museum. They also at the time had a flower show being put together at the museum where one artwork would get to recreate a piece of work made out of flowers and you were really able to see how the flowers related to the artwork. There are plenty of resources available for attendees.…

There was hardly any room for storylines for real human connectedness between the black and white women. The author could have acknowledged racism as a vehicle of white privilege rather than espoused hatred throughout the book, yet the appeal of this fictional narrative would have not met critical acclaim or popularity. The novel did not capture the core of life in Mississippi in the 1960’s, where women endured and resisted inequality without the help of a “ white saviour” to rescues them, worked in their employers homes and raised their children alongside their own, wishing those children would not fall victims to lynch mobs or racist acts of violence. Skeeter’s role as the appointed saviour to the alienated maids demonstrates my argument that white characters will often become a more central theme in novels involving black characters. If literature or films such as the “The Help” are going to include people of colour as main characters, than their voices should not be ignored in order to appease mainstream audiences by throwing in a white character and focusing on their voice.…

This was definitely the most simple of the displays put here because all of the paintings were lifelike and easy to decipher because they were also more straightforward and seldom open to interpretation unlike the photos in Concentrations 60. Overall, visiting the Dallas Museum of Art was a new and exciting experience because its exhibits really opens one’s eyes as to how art alone reflects different periods of time, cultures, and places around the world and evolves as does humanity. Moreover, it shows how art does not come from culture, but creates it and often evinces the psyche of its…

In the movie, Skeeter writes “The Help,” a story about the under-paid maids, in order to influence change among the folk that think black people lack legal rights to voice an opinion because of the skin that they wear. Aibileen’s best friend Minnie, who eventually contributes to the book through her story and “insurance,” helps ensure protection before the release of the cultural changing book. Despite her negativity, Miss Hilly Holbrook is a perfect example of an…

Aibileen and Minnie shared their experiences with Skeeter as she took down notes. As the stories went on, more black maids joined them to share their experience what it was like to be a black maid. All of them described it as raising a white child that will grow up and be as arrogant as their mother. Skeeter began to see the truth of their mistreatment and was influenced to create awareness to their civil rights. After the many stories and influences Skeeter was able to publish her book.…

When she moved back home, instead of dropping her interests of becoming a writer and looking for a husband, Skeeter started looking for a job at a newspaper. Skeeter views African-American maids in a different way than the rest of her community. She is interested in their point of view and how they feel about the families they have worked for and how they are treated. While others blow them off and treat them like they were insignificant. In the movie, Skeeter is describing to Miss Stein, an editor at a New York book publisher and also her mentor, that she would like to write a book from the perspective of the help.…

Miss Skeeter, Aibileen, and Minny although living in the same society do not experience the same type of life. White people’s minds are polluted with the idea that blacks aren’t equal to whites from a young age: “‘I want to yell so loud that Baby Girl, [Mae Mobley] can hear me that dirty ain 't a color, disease ain 't the negro side of town. I want to stop that moment from coming – and it come in every white child 's life – when they start to think that colored folks are not as good as whites,’” (112).…

The theme is important to not only the viewers but the artist that has items displayed. This is important because each artist thoughtfully creates a theme for their work and if it is not displayed in the right environment it could distort their product’s meaning. The style on each floor of the Denver Contemporary Art Museum was the same throughout due to each floor having the same artist. Unfortunately, during my visit, I did not find a theme set for the exhibitions. After consulting with the director of the Museum, I found out that each exhibition is changed every four weeks and only occasionally there is a theme portrayed throughout the exhibitions.…
