Debating in numerous forms has a long history, and can be traced back to the philosophical and political debates of Ancient Greece. The first student debating society was the St. Andrews Debating Society, formed in 1794 as the Literary Society. The Cambridge Union Society was founded in 1815, and is the oldest persistently operating debating society in the World. The Cambridge Society served as a model for the succeeding foundation of similar societies at several other universities, including the Oxford Union and the Yale Political Union. Debating topics covered a broad spectrum of topics while the debating societies allowed participants from both genders and all social backgrounds.
Debating teams are often helpful to high school students in teaching the writing process, as well as in teaching rhetoric. By engaging in debate, one can develop strategies for argument and persuasion. It helps one feel comfortable speaking in an unknown situation and can build ones confidence. Furthermore, debate can be a way for one to communicate how one feels about certain issues. Telling someone how you feel and what you think can be powerful and effective. Structured thinking is key and can really keep one engaged.

Due to this setting, Tannen was reminded of a term coined by Walter Ong: agonism. Tannen describes Ong’s term as “a debate in which the contestants are assigned opposing positions, and one party wins.…
