Last year, our publication was nominated for a major national award (the NSPA Pacemaker), and two of my photographs received recognition from a local journalism organization.
We have also recently expanded the scope of our work. Last year, Drops of Ink moderated a discussion with the mayoral candidates of our town prior to an election. We are currently planning a panel discussion regarding gun control and school safety in light of the Parkland, Florida, shooting.

During my sophomore year, I organized a fundraiser that showcased the talents of dozens of impoverished artists from Nicaragua and Guatemala. The Pulsera Project, or the “Bracelet” Project, sells colorful necklaces, purses, and wrist jewelry internationally through interested schools, and the profits go to the artisan makers. Offering diversity in design, the organization reveres its ability to introduce new, exciting hues to each student it impacts. My friend Paige and I wished to contribute to this project, so we set out to “color the world” of Revere High School.…

It left us all with the power to be great leaders, better teachers, and amazing allies to those who need it most. We as representatives of Colorado Academy, attend workshops run by students who passionately advocate for their topic, whether it's gender double standards, stereotyping, effects of socio-economic class, ways society labels us, or representation from the media. Each class taught and provided us with experiences and knowledge that allows us as students to expedite the process of making our world a better place. The first workshop I attended was named Two Faces which touched on the comments and questions we make towards people that we say…

I believe leadership is not how most define it. I believe leadership is less about the number of people that agree and more about how one supports a cause, why one cares, and the actions one takes. I know leadership. And I’ve seen what has worked and what hasn’t. Even though people sometimes construe leadership as who has the most followers, the underlying principle is quite different -- in a profound way.…

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them" is the famous line penned by William Shakespeare and the later of these is where I find myself. While the definition of greatness can vary, I believe that being a leader and making a difference can be a definition of greatness. It does not require becoming the CEO of a company or being famous, but rather knowing that an individual has completed their goals and made a difference in the world. In my current position as Coordinator of Information Systems and Communication at Berea College 's Office of Admissions, I have found myself faced with the greatness of being a leader, however, I also find myself being much less equipped than I would like to be.…

Since September of 2015, I’ve been interning with the Quaker-based, non-violent, social justice group, the American Friends Service Committee. During this time, I’ve learned so much about myself, as well as Kansas City’s youth. I’ve helped organize a city-wide high school poster art project and a poetry workshop of the same — giving students a platform to speak out on social issues. This consisted of conducting interactive lecture style classes in Kansas City metro schools such as Paseo, Wyandotte, Washington, Cristo Rey, De La Salle, and various youth organizations. I’ve helped students from Muslim, Latino, African (Black), Caucasian (White), and other communities, use their voice through art.…

Leadership should not only be a manager’s responsibility but a shared effort to accomplish an organizational objective. The challenges of a leadership position can be significant, whether you are a leader of a team, a choir, a department, or an entire organization. Leadership is about growth.
