M.C. Escher was born on June 17, 1898 in Leeuwarden, Netherlands (“M.C. Escher Biography”). His parents, George and Sarah Escher, had four other sons, Arnold, Johan, Berend, and Edmond. George Escher was a civil engineer. Sarah was George’s second wife and the daughter of a government minister. Maurits was the youngest of the five children and was known as Mauk to his family (O’Conner, Robertson).
While in primary and secondary school in Arnhem, Escher struggled in all of his classes. The only class he excelled in was art, which he had for only two hours a week (Ernst 7). Jetta shared Escher’s interest in art and would often draw and paint. Jetta’s mother was also an artist, but neither of them had any formal training in the arts. In 1924, Maurtis and Jetta got married in the sacristy and town hall of Viareggio. After the wedding, the couple went to live near Jetta’s parents in Rome. They lived in a small home on the outskirts of the city until their first son, George, was born in 1926.
