Lysander And Hermia Quotes About Love

Improved Essays
Love is an indescribable feeling. It is a thought process we cannot change just because we want to. Something magical or extreme must happen in order to change love. It is tough luck if you love someone that doesn’t love you. Demetrius is in love with Hermia, but Hermia is in love with Lysander. Demetrius who knows this, won’t give up and will stop at nothing to get Hermia to love him. He is wasting his time. This doesn’t make sense for him to chase a woman who loves another man. Especially when he has a different young woman head over heals for him. Demetrius says to Helena, “I love thee not; therefore pursue me not.” (2.1.195). He puts down a woman that loves him to give attention to a woman who does not.
This is the same case for Helena. After Demetrius puts her down repeatedly she responds with, “And even for that do I love you the more.” (2.1.209). No matter what Demetrius does, Helena will still love him and pursue him. She cannot help it. She will not give up hope on Demetrius even though he has no hope for them.

This spell causes Lysander to fall in love with Helena. Here Hermia has her heart ripped out. This could cause a lot of anger. After Lysander has told Hermia he loves Helena and not her, which has happened all overnight. Hermia simply says, “Why are you grown so rude? What change is this, Sweet love?” (3.2.272-273). Obviously Hermia is confused and upset, she still shows her love by calling Lysander, “...Sweet love?” (3.2.273). This doesn’t make sense, because she should be mad and upset. Instead she still has the patients to call him by a sweet

She compares her loyalty for Demetrius to a dog’s loyalty to its owner, and she knows she will never come to terms with herself unless Demetrius accepts her. Alas, Demetrius is a magnet that will only seek out other hearts such as Helena, as Helena is fundamentally unworthy of his attraction and only artificial means are capable of changing that. This leads the audience to believe the play follows a binary type of love with the mortals in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, for Demetrius is repulsed by Helena, Helena is hopelessly attracted to Demetrius, and Hermia and Lysander have a powerful bond where both “magnets” attract; there is no moderate form of attraction. Just as Helena is but a slave to her heart’s true desires and Demetrius’ draw, there is no way to prevent magnets from drawing…

No matter what Demetrius said or did, she loved him as much as she ever did if not more. This kind of love shouldn’t be taken lightly, and used as an advantage but instead be received as a gift.
