Lynyrd Skynyrd's Song 'Simple Man'

Improved Essays
From a very young age, my mother and father taught me to do what makes me happy, and not to worry about anyone else. “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd embodies what I have been taught all my life. My mom used to sing this song when she was putting me to sleep, and ever since then, “Simple Man” has held a very special place in my heart. This is the song I think of when I’m having a hard time or when I need to remember to live for myself, despite what anyone thinks about me or the ones around me. My family never did fit the cookie cutter definition of family, and because of this, the things we bonded over were few and far between. Music happened to be one of these things. This song always brings us closer together. It was like one of those rare …show more content…
My grandmother was an extremely big influence on my life, and after her passing, I was devastated. These lyrics don’t particularly pertain directly to my feelings in that specific situation, but they reminded me to calm down and appreciate all the special times that I had with her. This song frequented the top of my playlist for a few months after that day, and now as I listen to it, it doesn’t bring any bad memories into my head, but only good ones. “Simple Man” reminds me of the countless struggles I have been through and have overcome in my life, especially when hearing these two lines. Another line that I closely connected to says, “Follow your heart and nothing else.” Everyone remembers this line from elementary school teachers. They told us, “Live your dreams.”, and “Always follow your hearts to wherever they will lead you.” I obviously didn’t even have a clue as to what they were talking about at the time, but this year, I have finally realized why it is important to do so. You make your own choices, and you can decide what you want to do with your life. You have full control. My dad has constantly reminded me of this as well, often using himself as an

We discussed a few different topics such as what his life was like being a kid, what he thought of school, and how he knew my grandmother was the one for him. It sometimes got off tracks talking about his children and what happened to them, but for most of the time we stayed on topic. We talked a lot about what life was like and his jobs and his life overall. This interview started about his life in Tennessee and it wasn't easy for him back then, he had to walk miles to school and his dad wasn't around very often.…

“Things always have a way of figuring themselves out.” That’s what my dad always would tell me when I was younger which, in a way, relates my life to Jeannette Walls’ in The Glass Castle. He told me that whether or not things had problems over time or in a matter of seconds, they would always figure themselves out. I carry those words with me as a reminder that things for me were really hard at one point, but in the end they figured themselves out. My parents divorced when I was twelve years old, and just headed into 7th grade.…

However, there is one song that I find to shape me and the way I live my life. One song that demonstrates my strong work ethic, my pride to live in America, and how I am proud of my dad is Toby Keith’s song “Made in America.” No matter what kind of work I am doing I always work hard and strive to be the best.…

Free from all the extra attention and scrutiny from teachers, who did all they could to mold the freshman class into proper "Vincentians", I felt as though I could finally relax and have a regular high school career. It was a slow paced year where pressures such as ACT and SAT preparation, applying for colleges, and deciding your career path seemed so far away. As long as I remember, I have been on a never ending journey of discovering my talents and finding a career that would be most suitable for me to contribute to society. I was convinced that If just lived life the way I was supposed to and fulfilled my responsibilities, that it all would just come to me one day. Because of my assumption of how much time I had to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I found myself putting these important thoughts on a hiatus.…

This song belongs on my life soundtrack because I’ve always been raised to be humble, kind, and show respect. This song reminds me of my younger childhood where my mother would take me to church, visit my grandparents and spend time with family. This song describes me because I’ve always been kind, humble, and respectful to everyone or at least I try to be most of the time. My favorite parts of the song are where he sings about going to church with your mother, and visiting your grandparents. I also love where it goes don’t steal, cheat, and don’t lie.…

As an eighth grader, I had no choice but to balance out my school work, making sure to do all the chores, and taking care of my three younger siblings at home by myself. My parents would be up in the hospital taking care of my now passed grandmother, who had cancer, while I, being the oldest child in the family, had to stay home alone to take care of my younger siblings. At first it was a difficult task for my 12-year old self to handle. While I was doing my homework or studying, I would have to stop what I was doing and help my siblings on their homework. Another scenario would be me cleaning up the house, even though there were homework waiting for me on the table.…
