The song is usually played at the end of their concerts and it is a favorite among many people as it has many different means like for instance one person played it during their graduation and another person played it during a funeral. It was first being recorded in 1972 and it was meant to be a ballad at the time. It was continued to be refined until 1973 when it was being recorded for the final cut. They had been working on the song for over 2 years. The lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant came up with the lyrics one night and he had two of the bands guitarists Allen Collins and Gary Rossington play the song continuously until he was finally able to write the lyrics for the song. The meaning behind the song and its lyrics is it is about this guy and this girl and how the guy was trying to explain to the girl that he can’t settle down and make a commitment. The opening verse, which is “If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?” is inspired by Allen Collins’ girlfriend who asked him the exact same question in that opening verse of the song. It was finally released in 1974 by itself as a single.
