Reading is important for teenagers because good reading skills are essential to getting into university or college. Many teenagers do not like reading and it takes a while to find the perfect book. Flowers in the Sky by Lynn Joseph is a good book for teenage girls, even though they may not like reading. In this book, Nina Perez a fifteen year old girl moves from Dominican Republic to New York. In New York, she uncovers her own strength and independence; as well as discovering disturbing secrets about her older brother, Darrio. One thing the author does differently is incorporate Latin words, these are usually shown in italics. Nina is used to speaking Latin in Dominican Republic and it is important for her to keep knowledge of her culture. This is something unique because it makes you think about what the author is trying to say. An example of this is when Nina says, “Something felt muy malo here” (Joseph 77). Instead of saying suspicious or something bad, the author chose to incorporate a different language into her writing. Also, Joseph includes descriptive words to help enhance her writing, which gives a better understanding of the characters and setting in the novel. An example of this is shown when Nina is describing one of her best friends in Dominican, “Mirabel with her long, black hair and quick smile (…)” (Joseph 15). The author does this many times for many of the characters in the book and helps give the reader a visual representation. To add on, the author has a different writing style because she writes with a lot of utility. She writes things that people will use in their everyday lives. Sometimes at the beginning of a chapter she includes a sentence that foreshadows what the chapter is going to be about. Near the end of the book Darrio ends up going to jail. At the beginning of the chapter Nina says, “It’s scary how the best day of your life can turn into the most horrific” (Joseph 266). This is not only a hint about what happened; it is always something that readers can relate to. This leads to another reason this book is good; the relatable messages throughout the

Ferlinghetti’s The World is a Beautiful Place is a literary work with a sense of great sarcasm and satire. While the title suggests that the author holds a rather optimistic and positive view about society and its underlying allure, the actual poem is about the disguised charms of the world through the lens of cynicism. A quick glance at this poem is enough for readers to notice the author’s unique structural choice, and combined with a distinctive poetic pattern, alongside the use of contrasting paradoxes, Ferlinghetti’s The World is a Beautiful Place demonstrates his ironic, sarcastic and stylistic approach, as well as his use of symbolism and figurative language, and deals with the inherent coexistence of the good and the bad, of light and darkness in the world. Imagery plays an important and extensive role in the development of the overall theme; the charming beauty of the…
