As a little girl, she performed in Vaudeville alongside her aunt Gladys and uncle Mac. Then as a young girl she trained race horses as well as planned tobacco. During WWII, she flew air planes for the Civil Air Patrol. She spent time with the Indians who lived along the Mississippi River. There she learned to forage for food, to do bead work. In later years, it was this appreciation for native people that inspired her art.
