Imagine this scenario: Your best friend is being bullied by a classmate. You tell teachers and the principal. They don’t fix the problem. You tell him to stay home, saying you’re sick. I firmly believe that lying is acceptable in our society. Lying is justified when it can be used to protect and care for others. “People who say lying is wrong are often thinking in abstract,” Bella Depaulo, professor at UC Santa Barbra. At least once in your life, you will have to lie to help yourself or someone else. There are very rare moments in life where lying to get out of trouble could be a life or death situation.”Not only is lying justified, it is sometimes a moral duty,” Randy Cohen, ethics columnist says. Lying is considered bad, but can spare someone’s emotions from despair or anger. Many white lies are acceptable, but the idea of lying is usually considered a bad thing. “Your fictional spouse, about to accept a Nobel prize, asks if they look fat. If you’re on the way to the award ceremony, you would say ‘you look fabulous.’ Anything else would be cruel.” said Randy Cohen. Telling a white lie to a friend or spouse for the right reasons can strengthen a social bond. As long as they don’t know the truth, the individual will feel better about the lie. “If you’re at a party and your partner is saying something you disagree with, for example, you might stay quiet, in the name of marital harmony. Many relationships fail when both partners have a disagreement regarding one of the partner’s beliefs. The person being told the lie prefers to hear it than hearing the truth. lying could be a solution when it comes to a failing relationship. Some people may argue that lying, even when you’re protecting someone else, is considered a sin. However, some historical figures wouldn’t have survived as long as they did without deception. This is the area where black and white merge to make the grey that creates the scandals of the type of lies we tell. This area not only covers intimate relationships, but with friends, family members, and anyone that is intractable. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a prime example of where to find the most justified places to lie. In the beginning, when all the girls dance in the woods, the most simple and easiest way to avoid the killings or accusations would be for every girl to deny ever being in the woods. This lie would get no one in trouble, and this lie would prevent any relationships from being annihilated such as Giles Corey 's did to everyone he ever knew.…

In Sissela Bok's article “Rejecting All Lies: Immanuel Kant”, ”A lie, even if it does not do wrong any particular individually, for it vitiates the source of law”(4). Lying to a close friend or a significant other is occasionally improper because lying was more meaningful than showing love for a relationship which causes distress. Furthermore, Sissela Bok also says, “It harms the liar himself, by destroying his human dignity and making him more worthless even than a small thing”(4). Lying is sometimes unacceptable because it can damage the one who is lying and leave them feeling dishonest and untrustworthy. In simpler terms, lying is to protect loved ones from several issues that may occur during the process to avoid causing a clash which can ruin either one…

Is it ok to lie in any situation, or is it just wrong to lie at all ? In four articles that I read, it states a couple of things, for example, they talk about lying and if it's bad, is lying sometimes good, and is lying good. I believe lying is only good sometimes and it should only be used in white lies. I think a good time to lie is when you protect someone. One scenario of this is the story of Ann Frank.this is a good example because they were protecting Ann and her family by saying that there was nothing upstairs.…

Everyone on Planet Earth is a liar; harsh but true. Every day we say “Yes, I am okay” or “No, I did not steal the cookie.” These are examples of the millions of lies told, big or small. In the short story The Ways We Lie, the author described ten types of lies: lies of delusion, lies of omission, lies of dismissal, or white lies (Ericsson 409-416). Upon reflection, I realized that I am guilty of telling many lies to save my image, to get out trouble, or to protect other people.…

Lying is never ethically okay, yet it is done on a daily basis and is therefore more widely accepted by various people. Generally, lying should be avoided, but there are many situations where it is justified. Instinctive lies, or lies that you automatically tell on the spot are usually ok because it is part of human nature to instinctively lie to protect ourselves. However, planned lies, like stories that you make up on the go or false ideas that you think of before expressing them should never be allowed. For example, if someone were to ask you if you ate the last piece of cake, depending on their tone of voice, for many, their first instinct would be to say, “No!,” without even thinking.…

For example, if there is a person who does not like conflict, he or she may tell a lie to fix the problem (Ford 98-99). People will also lie to other people by leaving out less desirable information that might hurt the other person emotionally. Lisa Firestone wrote “Even lies told in the name of protecting others can leave you feeling pretty bad about yourself, because you don’t feel like an authentic, strong individual when you aren’t being honest” (Firestone). The most common reason that lies by omission are told is to prevent unpleasant situations from occurring, even if it causes one to feel guilty (Firestone). People who have a big heart or cannot stand the thought of hurting someone or embarrassing them typically will lie to the other person by leaving out the more displeasing details.…
