Lying is not the key to life, but in some situations it is the best thing to do. When Nat was in the bad situation all he needed was positive thoughts, so he felt like the best thing to do was lie. Nat did not want to upset his family. In the short story "The Birds" by Maurier, the main character, Nat Hocken, repeatedly lied to his family because the children were too young to understand, the children needed to remain calm,and he did not want to make his wife nor the kids upset. Children do not understand the parents' problems sometimes, so Nat did not inform them of everything. Sometimes children do not need to know about everything that goes on in life. Nat was very tired and busy, he did not need anybody else upset during this time.
