The beginning of the song she talks about how she was young and fell in love with a man who thought she would be happy with. She is saying that younger women fall in love in with men who have a certain charm to them. The next part of the lyrics say that she was treated like all men who are like him treat women and that he should not be surprised to tell him what he is. In these lyrics she is saying that some men do not take love seriously because he did not treat her very well and is so disappointed that she tells him that. The end of the first part of the song comes with the verse which says, “Mal Hombre” and mentions it again; “Eres un mal hombre” which means that he is a cold hearted man and has no soul. What she means by those lyrics is that she was heartbroken to find out that she was taken advantage and that she wants him to know what he did to her. Life for Tejanos was somewhat hard during that time because when the Mendoza family was starting to start getting money the Depression hit and that caused them to move to San Antonio. In San Antonio was where it all started for Mendoza as she got her big break on the radio, “It was the only Spanish-language program that existed at the time, you see. His program was called El Programa de la Voz Latina. I don’t remember the name of the radio station, but this program was the only one if its kind” . Mendoza, once exposed, to many listeners on the radio was able to game some recognition and many people wanted to hear her perform again. After she started to get more recognition she started playing in certain restaurants and shops. Eventually Mendoza started performing in bigger places and would get sign to a record company, “In 1934 I recorded the first record. Two months later the company got in touch with me again, because as soon as the “Mal Hombre” recording was released it was a hit” . The song would affect Mexican-Americans society in that Mendoza became very popular while touring cities because, “Often reproduced narratives of Mendoza’s dedication to traveling and singing to poor migrant laborers and her recording success in ranchera and corrido music have
