Lydgate is an orphan whose uncle is an viscount. He does not depend on his family but chooses to study medicine in Paris. He devotes himself to study pathology and anatomy. He longs to offer free medical service and contributes to social charity. Lydgate comes to Middlemarch hoping to have great success. He wants to try his new form of therapy but receives a lot of criticism. Lydgate works in a charitable hospital which is built by the banker Mr. Bulstrode. He meets with Rosamond who is the daughter of Mayor Vincy. Rosamond is a beautiful girl, but she has some fatal defects. She is selfish, arrogant and indifferent.
