Lyddie's Argumentative Essay

Lyddie’s actions toward the trespassing bear revealed that she was independent, strong, and smart. Her position in the family is basically the mother because she takes care of the kids and her mother since she is not very mentally stable.

The bear became the family’s “undoing” by sending her mother, Rachel, and Agnes away to her Aunt Clarissa’s because Lyddie’s mother thought the bear was a sign of the devil. Aunt Clarissa told Lyddie’s mother that when the end drew near, the devil would walk the earth so she went to Aunt Clarissa’s to be with her sister when the end comes. Charles and Lyddie stay because they would not have enough money for the coach fare for all of them.

Lyddie was determined to stay on the farm because she wanted to keep the farm and house clean for when her father,mother, and her two little sisters come back to the house.

She sent Lyddie to Cutler’s Tavern and Charlie to Baker’s mill to pay the debts. Lyddie and Charles would work at the tavern and mill until they raised enough money to pay them off.

The Stevens family is generous and likes to help out the Worthens and even gave Lyddie more money for her calf then it was worth.The Stevens are also watching over the Worthens house for Lyddie to make sure it is ready for when she comes back. Lyddie’s relationship with the Stevens was different than her mother’s because her mother disliked them because they are Quaker’s and she thinks that their religion is a disgrace. Lyddie thought the Stevens was a nice family and she liked them.

Lyddie’s life at Cutler’s Tavern felt like slavery because she had to work a lot at the tavern but she was not getting any money for herself. All of the money she earned goes to her mother’s debts she
