“For never was a story of more woe / Than this of Juliet and her Romeo” (Shakespeare 5.3 321-322). Shakespeare wrote one of the most well- known love stories of all time, Romeo and Juliet. This book is known as the greatest love story of all time, although some people believe that this book is not about love, but instead lust. For example in act 2, scene 1, lines 3-6 Romeo says, “It is the East, and Juliet is the sun! / Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, / Who is already sick and pale with grief / That thou her maid art far more fair than she.” Romeo is comparing Juliet’s beauty with the sun, personifies the moon, and then says Juliet is brighter or more beautiful than the moon. Even though Juliet states, “It is too rash, too unadvis’d, too sudden; / Too like lightning, which doth cease to be / Ere one can say ‘It lightens’ ” (Shakespeare 2.2 124-126). Meaning that the relationship is too sudden and that she cannot make any promises on what can come next, but Juliet later declares, “But to be frank, and give it thee again. / And yet I wish but for the thing I have. / My bounty is as boundless as the sea, / My love as deep; the more I give thee, / The more I have, for both are infinite. / I hear some noise within. Dear love, adieu!” (Shakespeare 2.2 137-142). Juliet is saying that her love for him is as deep as the sea and the more that she adores him, the more that she can love him. Even though there are people that do not believe that this story is about love, but in fact about lust, there is evidence to prove that this story is about Romeo and Juliet’s ‘misadventur’d and fearful passage of their death- mark’d love.’ These two lovers are willing to go against their families and friends for each other. They will even try and alter the universe in their favor, which is the only way they can live peacefully with their family, state, and in Verona. All- in- all this story of these two star- crossed lovers is in fact a story of love, instead of
