In Lust, Caution by Eileen Chang, Wang Chia-chih is a young actress who devises a plan with other conspirators her age to seduce Mr. Yee, the head of intelligence services, into a relationship with her so that she can have him assassinated in a plan to undermine the government. However, despite having a set plan with her co-conspirators that she will remain strictly acting in order to achieve the final goal of his assassination, right before the assassination takes place, Wang has a change of heart and alerts Mr. Yee to run and saves his life. Wang’s instantaneous decision leads to the execution of her entire conspiracy group, including herself. Why Wang decides to alert Mr. Yee is not clearly stated, however, she clearly ends up blurring …show more content…
Despite Wang never having sex with anyone and having an overall feeling of dislike for Liang, it is seen that “while she basked in the deady afterglow of her success, even Liang Junsheng didn’t seem quite as repellent as usual.” (Chang 25). Wang’s commitment to the conspiracy in this instance is profound in a few ways. First, Wang is once again seen to get caught up in the role she is playing because she finds him less repellent after they have sex; in her performance she was able to convince herself to have different feelings for Liang that were not “repellant” which is quite a substantial improvement. Secondly, it shows her commitment to the conspiracy because she is willing to “sacrifice herself” (Chang 24) and have sex despite not wanting to do so. Wang is literally giving over her body not only to Mr. Yee during her acting for the conspiracy, but to Liang in order to have a better performance with Mr. Yee. Within the cultural context of the time this story takes place, it is considered unorthodox to have such sexual relations, as seen when Liang is the only one out of a group of young adults whom has had sex. Wang is defying this social standard in order to be successful in the conspiracy, showing how dedicated she is to bringing down Mr. Yee and the government. However, despite this initial commitment, she still ends up blowing the conspiracy, displaying how much her outlook changes as the lines of reality and her acting are blurred from the time she initially decides to join the conspiracy and the end when she has had her relationship with Mr.

In the story, the author’s husband justifies “buying” another Manchu girl (Guiyu) to be their helper by saying “by taking care of this child and helping her understand the proper viewpoints of Japanese through our way of living, isn’t this working for goodwill between Japanese and Manchu…?” In this way, not only are the Manchu people assumed to be backwards and ignorant, but through the constant help of Koizumi and her seemingly “motherly” nurturing of Guiyu, it becomes evident that the notion of “imperialist motherhood” was used to incorporate women into the goals of the nation. The author’s “bringing up” of Guiyu parallels with Japan’s imperialist motives in the “young, newborn nation” of Manchuria. By portraying Japanese imperialism under this pretense, a role for women becomes established. Although normally disintegrated from society, especially along the lines of political representation, women are gradually seeing themselves as being part of the nation and having an important place in its efforts from these texts.…

He like the boy in Araby just totally disregards everything except for the three females in the store.…

In a scene from chapter eight of The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne describes that adulteress Hester Prynne pleads with the governor and several clergymen (including Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale), Puritan authorities who speculate that Prynne fails to pass on their Puritan Religion to her daughter, to refrain from taking Pearl away from her. Throughout this courtroom scene, Hester calls Reverend Dimmesdale forward to support her plea, which after some persuasion, in turn results in the young reverend delivering a speech on behalf of Hester, who challenges the Puritan authorities grounds to judge her. Hawthorne implies that when they come to face with Hester committing adultery, the Puritans, so unadjusted to dealing with sin, conclude that she…

Orange is the New Black (OITNB) is a Netflix original web series created by Jenji Kohan and adapted from the memoir of Piper Kerman, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison (2010), which explores life inside a women’s prison system. The series includes a diverse cast of historically excluded Black, Latina, and transgender actresses. How do they create seemingly groundbreaking media based on the controversial world of prison systems in a time when inequality is perpetuated by institutionalized racism: a time when the likelihood of black women going to prison is 1 in 18, while for the white women it is 1 in 111 (The Sentencing Project). Race is a determining factor in how institutionalized systems in our society affect individuals.…

I find the feeling toward women in this time quite contradicting. I believe that Yuan cherishes women while society tells him to dismiss them. A quote from this passage that supports my previous statement is, “If husbands and sons could only remember that their wives and mothers are helpless and suddenly repent, wouldn’t that be best?” (The Problem of Women, pg 215).…

As John Bunyan states, in his book the Pilgrim’s Progress, “One leak will sink a ship, and one sin will destroy a sinner” (qtd. on BrainyQuote). Sin is a transgression of divine law, especially a willful or deliberate violation of some religious or moral principles (Sin n.p.). Sin is just another characteristic of human life. The consequences of sin are something that every human being will experience during their lifetime, because everyone is bound to make a mistake along the way. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s the Scarlet Letter uses Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale to describe his views on the main results of sinning.…

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne presents three important scaffold scenes that help determine the genre of the novel. The genre could be classified as a romantic tragedy and historical fiction, which is Romanticism for this novel. Even though the story is more of a tragedy, the romantic elements are littered throughout the story, which is why some people consider the novel a romance. The romantic genre could mean two different types of romance, a love story, or Romanticism, a movement in art and literature during the eighteenth century, in which the novel includes both. Romanticism is focused on nature, emotion, and metaphysics in the American colonies, which represents historical fiction.…
