Quality, Lures, and Positive Reinforcement
When first walking into a store I hear music playing. I always seem to notice the bold, colorful sale and clearance signs. Stores make it very hard to walk away from a sale because it always makes me think that I will never get this good of a deal at another store. The main stores I shop at are Kohl’s, American eagle, and Victoria Secret. I have a credit card at all three stores to get more coupons to use on the item’s I need. To avoid purchasing something unnecessary, which happens on occasion, I will not step foot in a store unless I absolutely need something and I have a coupon for it. The coupons, the sales, and the clearance rack are very tempting and hard to refuse. Until I started working at Kohl’s I have learned and observed a few things about spending money: what coupons are really used for, and other tricks the store uses to lure customers in.

In the Newsweek essay, “ Honestly- You Shouldn't Have,” the author, Anna Quindlen, addresses the lack of attention people have to what they want versus what they need and how it is impacting their lives. The average consumer may find it hard to neglect a product and result in making a purchase without fully thinking if it’s a necessity. In the essay, “Honestly- You Shouldn’t Have,” Quindlen states, “ There are plenty of people buying cashmere sweaters and electronic gadgets, although the sweater drawer is full and the old VCR still blinks 12:00,” (Quindlen 1). This demonstrates how brainwashed and careless consumers are.…

With the use of operant conditioning, this could also be a great tool to use outside of the classroom. (Positive reinforcement) If a Childs (Behavior) is good during class (Consequence) a parent could praise them on it and treat them out, etc., for such good behavior at school and then (future behavior) the child would continue their progress of behaving in class.…

The role of supermarket having control on consumer spending is discussed in four different ways in literature. First, is the pricing strategies that are used in the supermarkets to trick consumers into thinking they are getting a good deal. Article 2 stated that “price is unquestionably one of the most important marketplace cues” (234). Authors have noted “several researchers have argued that a price reduction in coupon form may produce an increase in consumer response beyond that which would result from an equivalent lower no coupon price (235).
