Lung cancer is a type of cancer that forms cancerous cells in the lining of the lungs. It can happen in both lungs or just in one. It forms cancerous tumors that starts in the lining of bronchi, but it can also begin in different areas of the respiratory system, such as the trachea, bronchioles, and alveoli. Lung cancer occurs when a tumor grows inside the lungs in the bronchi (it’s a small tube that connects the windpipe to the inner surfaces of the lungs where basically gas transfer takes place). Lung cancer can spread to other parts of the body. In terms of this focus, cancer that begins in the lungs typically spreads to the brain, bones, adrenal glands and liver, in three different ways. The first way is through direct extension (by the blood cells), or by the lymph system. Direct extension happens when a tumor grows to the point that it begins to touch other organs or structures, and then penetrates itself into that organ. Tumor cells are capable to get into the blood and lymph circulatory systems and travel to other structures. Lung cancer is now the most prevalent form of cancer affecting Americans (222,500 new cases every year). Other than being known as the most common form of cancer, lung cancer is typically difficult to treat. Lung cancer, is the deadliest cancer for both men and women with about 160,000 Americans dying from it every year. This adds up to 30% of all cancer deaths. The first, lung cancer is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer in both men and women. Second, since 1987, more women have died each year from lung cancer than from breast cancer. Third, lung cancer causes more deaths more than the following other cancers combined (colon, breast, prostate). Fourth, smoking contributes to 80% and 90% of lung cancer deaths in women and men. Finally, secondhand smoke causes 3,400 cancer deaths among non-smokers every
