Lunch Time Observation Sample

Improved Essays
I completed three 30 to 45 minute observations at three different lunch times, in varying temperatures throughout the course of two week. I conducted my observation from 12:30 to 1:00pm on Wednesday, 12:30 to 1:15pm on Thursday, and 12:30 to 1:00pm on the following Friday. My observation location was located at a table that faced the machine, at this location I could see both what flavor, toppings, and vessel (what the subject put their ice cream in) of the person at the machine. I took field notes on my laptop; many students are on their laptops in Lenoir, so I was not payed attention to. I was perceived as an insider so all the subjects interacted with the ice cream machine as they would do not under observation. The data that I collected on each subject was their (assumed) gender, race, and their body type (I only differentiated between normal and athletic and did not end up including this info). I also collected on what they served themselves, I record the flavor they got along with what vessel they put the ice cream in. I recorded if they got toppings, relative size of the serving, and any other interesting notes. Finally, I made the assumption that those who were wearing a backpack and put their ice cream in a cone or a coffee cup were most likely leaving the dining hall and I took note of the number of people who did this.
Demographics

According to my data, 62% of ice cream patrons are female where in comparison the percentage of females at UNC is 57.4% (UNC, 2017). Similarly, 65% of the observed were white, 14% were Asian, 8% were black, and 6% were Hispanic. At UNC, the demographic is 62.2% white, 12.8% Asian, 8% black, and 7.2% Hispanic (UNC, 2017). The demographics support my belief that ice cream is something that people across all cultures can enjoy. It does not matter your race, gender, or cultural background ice cream is a treat that many can

Health and nutrition, particularly my own, is something I have taken special interest in lately as I’ve come to realize I’m rapidly approaching the second half of my life and want it to be as good as, or even better than, the first half. If I were to be asked eight weeks ago if I was a healthy person, my answer would be a resounding, “Yes;” my regular physicals and blood work confirming my response. And while I still believe that to be true, what an eye opener the Diet Analysis project was, as far as understanding my actual nutritional intake in comparison to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of nutrients recommended for optimal health and well-being. The following paragraphs not only detail the Diet Analysis PLUS program used for this project,…

Between 11:09 AM and 12:12 PM, the brightly lit, eight-tile hallways of Center High School are littered with students sitting cross-legged while a pair of white, Apple headphones protrude from their ears. In addition, the student’s faces almost look as if the grim reaper has stolen their soul and locked it in a gloomy closet only to be released after 12:12 PM. Students have always plagued the CHS hallways; however, the number has increased dramatically this school year. CHS students simply lack engagement during flex lunch. The disappearance of clubs, or the lack thereof, is one factor that considerably hinders student involvement during flex lunch.…

For this mini sociological activity, I watched an episode of “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix on Monday, November 9th from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Before watching the episode, I created a chart listing the possible racial-ethnic groups that could appear in the episode. Then as I watched the episode, I took a tally of the number of characters that belonged to each racial-ethnic group and wrote down words that described the characters of each racial-ethnic group and how they were portrayed. While watching an episode of “Orange is the New Black”, I observed a total of 42 characters: approximately 50% of which were Caucasian, 29% were African American, 17% were of Hispanic background, and 5% were of Asian background. I also found that most of the…
