The colleagues I have come in contact with handle each classroom differently and some control the class better than others. The clients or in this case the students we have spoken with all have different problems. Many of the students need someone to talk to. Some of the students have parental issues, behavioral issues, and even self-esteem. I have learned that one coping skill may work for one student, but may not work for the other. I have done this by first the ecological model, which is to look at the student’s environment first (Bronfenbrenner, 1994). The ecological model breaks down all aspects of the student through looking at the microsystem, mesosystem, ecosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. This can be applied to the student that is living with his grandparents due to parents being in jail. Looking at the child’s environment each aspect of the child’s environment with the grandmother versus the parents can be broken down with this model. The girl that is diagnosed with depression is very open to speaking about it while her mother wants to keep it hush hush, which requires the counselor to be aware of what she needs to tell the mother without crossing her boundaries. The theories I have learned have been the main aspects that have stuck out during my time at Lumberton. Also through my academic career, conscious discipline is a factor I have learned that really works well with children with behavioral issues. Conscious discipline is helping kids become aware of their emotions and learning to control them. This
