“The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.”We live every day of our lives not knowing when our last moment would be. Some people reach their 90’s while others are gone seconds after they drew their first breath. The question that arises from this is why are some people chosen to live longer than others? People all over the world have chosen the answer for this to simply be our purpose. Having a purpose in life gives our life more meaning and makes it more fulfilling. Luke Muehlhauser explores what it means to have purpose and proves that no matter what our definition of “purpose” is, we all have one.

For those who are religious, it is easy to see where the idea of purpose comes from. They believe in a God or a higher power that assigned to them a divine purpose. Muehlhauser concludes that “what matters is the quality of the purpose, not its source.” Having a purpose in life increases our health and happiness, as also stated in The Atlantic. It allows us to have something to live for and look forward to; otherwise, we would grow distant from the world and live a pointless life. It changes the entire vision or attitude in life, giving you feelings of satisfaction, for example, when you achieve a goal, or motivation when you find yourself about to reach it. Alexander the Great believed he was a god and he lived about his life with the purpose of proving this. He fought in raging battles, having lost none, and became one of the greatest generals of his time.
