Luke Bryan's Song, Kick The Dust Up

Before taking this course, I always listened to music that I thought may have been considered country music but never really thought about why each song I’ve chosen to listen too is considered “country”. My all time favorite country music star, is Luke Bryan and his song, “Kick the Dust Up”. It wasn’t until I entered high school, when I began to start listening to country music. Me and my friends would always listen to it as a joke and eventually became something we would listen to while getting ready to go to a country music concert, or getting ready to all sit on the couch and watch the CMA’s. My first country music concert was Luke Bryan, in 2014. When I went to his concert, I remember thinking in my head, never in a million years did I …show more content…
Kick the Dust Up reminds me of a song that you would listen to in a bar where everyone has a drink in their hand and is stomping their foot on the ground while people are trying to make room to dance. The song has a right hand melody, which is also known as layering. This is used when a performers hand is playing multiple notes at the same time but have different durations throughout the song. The song has a simple harmony and a rhythm that makes the song easy to sing too and also vibe to as well, no matter where you are. Kick the Dust Up also has a simple form that is accompanied by string instruments such as the banjo in the beginning and the electric guitar. Throughout the song you hear vocalist Luke Bryan, a piano, a guitar and only in the beginning, he starts the song off with a banjo. This song doesn’t have many instruments within the song but has a strong use of the guitar. Many country artists use multiple forms of instruments such as drums, bass, fiddle, guitar, piano and many more in their songs. But regardless, Luke Bryan’s song is kept simple with a start of the banjo in the beginning and a foot stomping beat throughout the …show more content…
However, what makes this song necessarily, “country”? Country music has changed tremendously over the years, making it harder for these terms and ideas to be so concrete. Country music has a variety of different styles that form the idea of what country music is. Sometimes when you listen to country music, it doesn’t always necessarily sound like country music, because the songs you are listening too may not be your stereotypical form of country music. But when I listen to the song “Kick the Dust Up”, I immediately get this country feel. I think I feel this way because not only is the song itself country due to the lyrics, but also because Luke Bryan is considered to be a top country artist. He’s from the south, has a southern background, lived in Tennessee, parents were farmers, he grew up on a farm…a very typical description of a “country” artist in my opinion. However, I think the song Kick the Dust Up has lyrics that make the song distinctively country. Why I believe this is because the songs talks about someone working on a farm all week long, making their money, and at the end of the week they take one last lap around the farm on their tractors while the sun goes down. This part of the song has a very distinct country description, because most people from the country work all week on the farm and are

This song talks about the speaker driving up to Oakland to see his girlfriend and can’t wait to get away from all the horrors of where he is living only to be met with new problems. This is similar to the fact that in the book Mayella is trying to get away from the horrors of kissing a black man by lying and saying that he raped her, trying to get him killed. Yet, she doesn’t know about the problems that can erupt from having an innocent man killed. The tone of both the book and the song is tense. You feel tense and a bit excited in the song when the speaker is talking about the problems he faces when he gets to his girlfriend.…
