Luisa Valenzuela’s short story, “The Censors”, gives the readers a look into what it is like to let the government persuade their thoughts on the common people. In the story Juan sends a letter to Mariana, after realizing that his letter might get her hurt, he joins the censor’s division. During his time there he gets distracted and loses focus on why he’s working for the censors. By speaking in third person limited it gives the reader insight on how Juan lost sight of his goal all the while connecting to the author’s purpose, which is to never lose sight on your goals. So he applied for the censor job as seen in the text, “no, he applied simply to intercept his own letter, a consoling albeit unoriginal idea” (Valenzuela, 338). On the job Juan becomes very dedicated and was promoted frequently. Juan eventually becomes way to involved with his job that he loses his focus on his true mission.. Thus censoring his own letter and which leg to his execution.
The overall purpose for the short story “The Censors “ is for young people to never lose sight on their goals. For example “He was about to congratulate himself for having finally discovered his true mission, when his letter to Mariana reached his hands” (Valenzuela, 339). He began to lose sight on his goal after he got the job, he was becoming to enjoy his job. He started deceiving his own colleagues and justify his action by saying it's all to save Mariana. As a result of him enjoying his job and forgetting why he was there, he killed himself. Never realizing he lost his focus of his goal, Juan became one of the best censors.
