Luis Garavito Labeling Theory

Decent Essays
How we are raised plays a huge role in how we live our lives when we are adults. Most people are raised somewhat well, but there are always those cases that don't fit in the norms. Like the case of Luis Garavito and his family. They have a story that definitely doesn't fit the social norms of any society. Luis was born January 25,1957 in Génova, Quindío, Colombia. He was the oldest of 7 brothers and he only went to school for a few years. He was raised with both parents, but his father was abusive and so were his neighbors. For many years he was physically and mentally abused, there is the a theory called the labeling theory. He had a long history of alcohol problems and mental illness’. Luis was arrested because he was suspected of sexually assaulting a young boy. Eventually, he confessed to murdering 140 boys, but they suspect that he has killed over 300. He would find poor kids that no one would notice were missing. He lured them in with money and gifts once he earned there trust he took them and raped and killed them. The weird thing is he only did this to boys there is no documentation of him raping and killing a girl. Now why is that? I don't know, but I suspect that it goes back to the labeling theory. He was the oldest of 7 brothers he didn't have any sisters so his dad couldn't abuse them. I believe that Luis thought that only boys deserved to be treated the way he was. He doesn't do stuff to girls because then he wouldn't be like his father.

Luis Garavito was arrested on April 22, 1999. He confessed to murdering 140 boys, and was charged with killing 172 throughout Colombia. He was found guilty on 138 of the 172 accounts. The maximum sentence for murder in Colombia multiplied by 138 comes to 1,853 years and 9 days, but Colombian law limits imprisonment to 60 years. Because he helped police find some bodies, as well as to his confessions. His sentence was reduced to 22 years. He may possibly qualify for even earlier release for further cooperation and good
