Ludwig van Beethoven: Genius, Innovator, Composer Born in a family of musicians, Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in or about December 16, 1770. (Bio.com) Upon uncertainty of the exact date of his birth, he was baptized December 17, 1770. (Bio.com) Beethoven acquired his name from his grandfather, who was a bass player at court, later becoming maestro at the chapel. Johann, Beethoven’s father, was not an encouraging figure in his upbringing. Johann was unjust and was not the least supportive of his “genius” son’s education.
