He explains different factors that gain high quality of success. One of these factors is Luck. In the book he gave an example of why professional hockey and soccer players were chosen to be hockey and soccer players and why some of professional hockey and soccer players are born in the specific months such as January, February and March. He believes that these players were lucky to be chosen and their date of birth had a big influence on their success as professional hockey and soccer players. Gladwell talks about the cutoff dates for hockey players. The cutoff is January 1st and children must be 10 years in order to become hockey player. Some of these children are born after January 1st. They are almost 10 years old but, they couldn’t join the team because they did not turn 10 years old in January 1st. Therefore they need to wait until the next January 1st to be able to join the team. However; the year after they are almost 11 years old. They are older, bigger, and mature, so they have higher chance of getting in to the team. They will move to a better team, have more opportunity to receive better coach and practice more, so they become better than other players just because they are older than other students. I was 17 years old and I didn’t know how to speak the English language. This was also true for my younger sibling. He couldn’t speak the English language and he was 3 years younger than me. I was in High school and my brother was in middle school when we got here. In order to graduate from High school in the United State of America, students should complete 4 years of High School. Since I arrived during my senior year in high school I could not finish High school because I was unable to get enough credits. Therefore I did not get a high school Diploma. On the other side, my younger brother was 14 years and had an opportunity to graduate from high school, because he was able to start from freshmen year. He was lucky to come to United States during his freshman year of his high school, because he was able to finish all his credits and get a high school diploma. I was still developing my English when I came to college, so I had to take ESL classes at Irvine Valley College to improve my reading and writing skills. It took me five semesters until I improved my English to have the chance to take Writing 201, which is the last level of ESL writings. As my brother had the opportunity in high school to take all of his ESL classes, he was placed in Writing one. When my brother got in college he didn’t took any of these ESL classes at Irvine Valley College. This

Malcolm Gladwell in chapter one of Outliers convincingly describes that some people are more advantageous than others due to when they are born. In this case, Gladwell talks specifically to rule creators and authorities of sports leagues and elementary schools, because they have the power to make adjustments to unfair advantages. By unfair advantages, hockey leagues in Canada fixed an age cut-off date for incoming players, and elementary schools positioning the oldest students within a class to higher academic levels. Overall that signifies the older, the more prestige a person gets. To prove his point, Gladwell implied in a simple and understandable statement that "players are judged on their own performance" (pg.17), but rebutes his claim…

According to page twenty and twenty-one shows a chart of the birth dates of a hockey team and most of the dates are January, February, and March. So that would mean that all of the hockey players who were born on the first three months would automatically have an advantage. The book also later mentions that the people that were on the team and weren't born in either of those months quit or weren't as good. The last thing that determines success is a person's parents.…

A Rhetorical Analysis of a Central Argument in Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers In his acclaimed novel Outliers, a book that details the various factors that contribute to success, Malcolm Gladwell aims to convince his audience of the simple yet powerful assertion that success cannot simply be attributed to the choices one makes, but rather that it is a product of opportunity. “Outliers are those who have been given opportunities — and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them”, claims Gladwell. Although he makes several noteworthy points within this novel, the idea that success and opportunity are tightly interwoven serves as his most pivotal argument. The use of such devices as anecdotes and statistics help Gladwell construct…

Fred Bowen states that “... you don’t know at age 8 or 10 or even 12 who will be the best athletes”(Bowen). Although it is true that a player’s skill may not be clear while they are young, Kyle Elmendorf, an experienced high school Basketball coach argues the other side- “... I explain that playing time will not be equal among players” (Elmendorf). Before each season, he writes a letter to each one of the parents explaining that their child’s playing time will be determined by skill alone. “The letter also states that if they are interested in getting the most playing time-or equal playing time- high school sports may not be for them” (Elmendorf).…

Just like Newton said, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. For luck, it is treated very much the same. Everyone has opportunities presented to them each with their own requirements. One may be given a job, but it is not just their character and strong work ethic that got them there. It was also a combination of their…

In “Outliers,” Malcolm Gladwell attempts to prove to his audience that their idea behind how success is attained in the United States is considerably different than what many Americans would like to think. In America many people believe in the concept of a hard-working individual pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and earning their success through dedication and talent. Gladwell attempts to prove while individual efforts are a big role in success, theses outliers would have never been as successful as they are without luck and opportunity. Throughout “Outliers,” Gladwell points out certain key opportunities that arose in the lives of many successful people and argues that these rare and exceptional opportunities are the reasons behind people’s success. While analyzing multiple stories of success, to persuade his readers into agreeing with his opinion on success, Gladwell incorporates the use of multiple logical fallacies that throw his entire perspective on success into question.…

Gladwell states his feelings on the topic of success directly in the ninth chapter, where he states that “to build a better world we need to replace the patchwork of lucky breaks and arbitrary advantages that today determine success… with a society that provides opportunities for all.” (pg. 268) He obviously wants the system to change so that others can have a chance at success. Gladwell believes that “the world could be so much richer than the world we have settled for.” (pg. 268)…

The debate over whether someone's success is based on their natural abilities or their hard work and dedication has been widely discussed by people everywhere. Authors Malcom Gladwell and David Epstein argue their different points to try and persuade their audience. David Epstein, author of The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance, believes that innate talent plays a bigger role in determining a successful destiny than practice. The author of Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcom Gladwell, has an opposing view; many hours of preparation is the leading factor in being an expert in your craft. Although both writers make compelling arguments, Gladwell's claim that hard work is the leading factor in determining…

The author also utilizes three different narratives of people who have received opportunities in their lives, which put them on the path to where they are now; Bill Joy, The Beatles, and Bill Gates. Gladwell’s main rhetorical appeal in chapter two, which is named The 10,000-hour rule, is the use of logos. The 10,000-hour rule states that in order to become extremely successful at one thing in life, you would have to have practiced whatever that may be for 10,000 hours. Furthermore, he says that you have to have some sort of opportunity that others do not get, in order for you to be able to put in that many hours.…

Gladwell proves that there cannot be a self-made man, only people who took advantage of the opportunity given to them. There are many different forms of opportunity, for some, it could mean that they were born into wealth, for others it could mean that their families pushed them up that proverbial mountain. What this means to Gladwell is that people without these advantages could work just as hard as another person, only to be met with failure, opposed to that other…

Once an equal division of resources is done, the next question to be addressed is how can the impact and character of luck be consistent with equality of resources? Dworkin differentiates between two kinds of luck - option luck and brute luck. Option luck is a matter of calculated and deliberate gambles; when one knowingly takes a risk anticipating a certain outcome, the responsibility of the consequence of that gamble lies wholly on that person. Brute luck, on the other hand is in nobody’s control. Outcomes that do not occur due to a deliberately taken risk are considered brute luck.…
