Luck Is A Matter Of Preparation Meeting Opportunity Analysis

Oprah Winfrey once stated, “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” But is luck really a combination of preparation with you being presented an opportunity? It is my belief that a majority of the time the answer is a resounding no. However, there are instances where if you are prepared and the right opportunity does present itself luck can sometimes be perceived as having a role. The most common opportunity that I myself have experienced as well as anyone else is having a job interview and getting offered a job. Like everyone in the world I search for a job that I fell is a great match for my skills. As a result the first opportunity presents itself when I submit an application in response to a job opening. Even though an application …show more content…
If possible I would need to do additional research about the company. That way if I needed to answer company specific questions, such as the always asked question of why I wished to worked for that company I am ready for a response that goes further than maybe what the interviewer expected. Just like everyone else in the world I try to also prepare myself mentally as every interview situation is different and you always come out of the interview feeling like you didn’t get the job. However, you get that call with the job offer and you feel like luck was on your side, when in reality that the opportunity that presented itself and your preparation created that lucky …show more content…
Living here in Las Vegas, NV you see the perfect example of that every time you walk in a casino and someone wins it big on a slot machine or at a table game. Yes, there are professional gamblers out there who prepare themselves by studying statistics and gaming theory for specific games; however, like me the majority of the people who go to the casino do not do any specific preparation at all. You just slide up to a machine or table and hope that luck is on your side. There may be people that saying choosing to go to a specific casino, getting into the car to go there, getting out the cash from the bank that is needed to gamble and choosing a machine or table can be considered preparation. I do not feel that this is the type of preparation that Oprah Winfrey has in mind. As these preparations are not necessary as you may have just gone to the casino to see a movie and have dinner with absolutely no intention of gambling, There were many occasions where I would go into the casino and just do that with never a thought to gamble and never gambling. On the other hand I would sometimes at the least minute decide just put the last $2 in a machine to see what happens. Many times I would lose all the money and on occasion I would be lucky, only due to the opportunity of chance and no preparation, and win some

However, this type of interview is thought to be a two-stage screening process. “Does the organization want this person as an employee, and does he or she want to be their employee?” (Text page 182) I have to apply for the job, determine my organizational fit, learn about the salary and benefits, and of course, present a good image. I would have to review my resume and make any necessary changes according to the initial job post.…

Being prepared for every outcome is a feat that few people accomplish. If one is prepared for every eventuality, good or bad, nothing could catch him or her off guard. Take death; if one waits for it every day, thinking the next breath could be the last, then death may never come or be so far off one misses out on aspects of life. On the other hand, if one stays ignorant to the fact that he or she will die, how can one be prepared for it to happen? Authors use the readiness of their characters as a way of building characteristics and deciding what actions said characters take.…

Resort casinos are specifically designed and run to cater to the richer upper class people and have standards for who the allow in. These gambling facilities do not have a large impact on the general society because only people who can afford to lose money are allowed in. The other casino type, that draws in the poor and desolate part of the population, has a much larger impact. The casinos that cater to the poorer part of the population use slot machines which incite a player to bet small sums as fast as they can get their fingers to fly by using lots of buttons and lights. After a night at the slots where multitudes of small sums were bet at a rapid pace, people are generally out of a lot of money without actually feeling like they lost a lost because they didn’t “bet enough to lose a lot.”…

As I walked into the small building, that in fact looked very enormous at the time, I began to anticipate every answer I would give to the person who interviewed me, so that to them, I would at least seem prepared. Although I had practiced my interviewing skills that very morning, I felt anxious and worried. Not knowing what to expect, many different scenarios ran through my mind, all of which weren't making my situation any better. Questions after questions were asked, all which seemed impossible for me to answer, and I felt as though I blew the whole thing. After the interview, many days passed by, and I had convinced myself that I did not get job.…
