You can succeed where others fail, if you understand the secret of this quote; “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity”. This essay will attempt to describe the quote by Oprah Winfrey, a famous American talk show host and my opinion on how you can apply it to daily life creating opportunities for success.

Opportunity for most people is often not present or not noticed, so ignoring those times of opportunity even though they can seem risky is the first behavior one must change. You must seize the opportunity, then act on it as the first step to increased success in life. How you actually act on that opportunity, as well being prepared to act on that opportunity are critical to the success of that opportunity. Learn to recognize emotional fear of taking risk, controlling that so you can objectively look at the opportunity and truly assess it’s worth and potential. It is important to be consistent, spending a reasonable amount of time on a regular basis but not so much time as to negatively impact other areas of your life. If you prepare appropriately, you will find you unlock new areas of knowledge and even uncover opportunities on your own without relying on luck to strike and present them to you. Proper, regular preparation will also give you more confidence in these opportunities but also your daily life. Just remember to keep it simple, as this is only preparation and a process of consistent gradual self-improvement. If you make it too complex, you will not be able to stick with it over the long haul or worse it may negatively impact your current life

In the texts "The Matthew Effect" by Malcom Gladwell and "Mindsets and Equitable Education" by Carol Dweck, the two authors seem to be arguing two completely opposite ideas, but they have a lot more in common when you actually break their ideas down. These two text give a problem (presented by Gladwell) and a solution (given by Dweck). Gladwell presents the problem that success is the result of circumstance, and Dweck fixes the issue by arguing that you can have success, no matter the circumstance, when you have a growth mindset. Many successful people do not begin as a virtuoso. In fact, most do not achieve success with only their power. They receive assistance, whether it was in the form of a mundane person or remarkable program. Two recurring factors Malcolm Gladwell mentions in Outliers: The Story of Success are opportunities, and as is repeatedly implied, environment. As Gladwell continuously proves many successful people, like Bill Gates, owe their success to those same two factors.…

In the book, Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell, the author is challenging our views of how people become successful. He is saying that to get to where you want to be you can’t rely solely on hard work or determination. It takes much more than that, something that many of us don’t get; opportunities. If you want to be successful, you need a series of opportunities that present themselves to you at the right time, to put you ahead of everyone else. He proves this idea in chapter two by using the rhetorical appeal of logos and ethos.…

I agree, I’m a true believer in one makes his or her own luck. In the past if an opportunity did not happen for me I would say, “Luck isn’t on my side”, but today, I think differently.
