Mr. Gatsby and Myrtle Wilson live almost parallel lives in two completely different worlds. In order to live their fantasies they both go to extremes, killing themselves due to their reckless actions. Myrtle and Gatsby’s death represents reckless, careless, materialistic behavior of characters that live within a dream rather than reality. Gatsby frequently goes to extremes in order to impress Daisy with his wealth; “The flowers were unnecessary, for at two o’clock a green house arrived from Gatsby’s, with innumerable receptacles to contain it… Gatsby, in a white flannel suit, silver shirt, and gold colored tie hurried in”(Fitzgerald 84).…

The progressive era in the late 1800s and early 1900s served as a turning point for women regarding the role they play in society. The traditional woman was domesticated and obligated to suppress opinions, both of which resulted in a lack of freedom. Some women and organizations wanted change. They worked to obtain the right to vote, as well as gain economic, political and social equality. In the novels The Great Gatsby and Dracula, the differences of a traditional woman and today's modern woman is seen through several unique characters, all of which are representative of the development of society.…

Jordan Baker went through life not caring a tremendous amount about who she hurt or what she did. She was the type of careless woman no one would care for, but because of her eye-catching appearance and name, many people did. She was kind of person to wear white but not actually represent the meaning of it. White was a symbol of purity and innocence, which was everything Jordan was not. Jordan is the best example of being careless and reckless simply because of the excessive amount of money she had and the lack of roots in her life.…

He tries to hide that he was once poor, knowing that Daisy will not go back to him if he was born an extremely poor man. Also, he tries to seem smarter and…

Many eagerly assume the upper class is known as a place full of people who are mature and put together, but that’s not the true story. Based on various movies and books, the upper class of the 1920s was full of people who gossip, go to parties where they don’t even know the host, brag about the lavish items they have, and get their money by going against the law. The immature nature of the upper class is exemplified in The Great Gatsby, specifically through the phony partygoers, the business affairs of Gatsby, and the lavish people of the city in Tom's second life. The phony party goers are people who come to Gatsby’s party and take advantage of how honorable it is to attend such a high level and important party.…
