Lucille: A Fictional Narrative

Superior Essays
It was an eerie autumn night, complete with howling winds and barren streets. Exceedingly few people had been audacious enough to walk the desolate streets of the Bronx, especially not at twilight. Not too far away, a family was in their small apartment. The young boy, Reginald, was huddled in bed listening to the angry footsteps and jaded voices that reverberated through their tiny home, scarring the wooden frame on which he lay. Reginald strained to hear his mother’s barely audible whisper, but could clearly discern the vicious, stinging sound of his father’s hand striking his mother, again, as he had so many times before. The oft repeated noise of hand striking face had become the soundtrack of his young life. Reginald’s father, Albert, …show more content…

His only indulgence was his weekly trip to the nearby bakery, where he met Lucille, the red-headed, high-spirited girl who changed the entire course of his life. Reginald eventually worked up the courage to ask permission to court Lucille and was filled with jubilation when she accepted him as her suitor. He wanted to make a favorable first impression and planned an incredibly sumptuous picnic for their first outing. When their picnic was rained out, Lucille spontaneously recommended that the pair go for a stroll along her favorite walking path. Along each step that they took, Reginald fell deeper and deeper into the hurricane that was Lucille. Reginald was rigid, rule-bound, and a perfectionist. Lucille was his complete foil, but it was her impetuous nature that transfixed him. He looked past his frustration when she changed plans last minute, focusing solely on her enthusiasm. When she declined his offer to go to a moving picture show, Reginald once again made excuses for her mercurial behavior. By the time winter turned to spring, Reginald had became completely oblivious to just how fractious their relationship was. Reginald dismissed Lucille’s date cancellations, absentmindedness and intermittent conversations still willing to overlook the tumultuous state of their relationship as he remained enamored with her wit and charm. When Reginald could no longer overlook their ebbing connection he vowed to put forth more effort. He suggested that they have bi-weekly suppers. Enthusiastically he described his idea to his beloved. Each evening that they were to enjoy supper together, Lucille was to prepare an ineffably delectable

Of course, I know there was time before I could speak or burble as infants do, so there must have existed a certain silence before sound, however the mere thought of being so silent—unable to reach out with voice or touch—disturbs me to no end. Alan Cumming shares an insight of the destructive hardship he faced as a child in his very descriptive narrative “Not My Father’s Son: A Memoir.” His dark and frightful tone as well as his deeply illustrated word choice is consistent throughout his writing as he shares the verbal and physical abuse he received from a very young age. Cumming takes his readers back to the time where he trembles in his boots from the sheer glare of his father, declaring dominance of the latter. He begins his one-night depiction by his father’s demand for him to get a haircut - a simple task to another - but goes on to explain that his father’s anger is stemmed from unhappiness and need for power. His father never tried to hide his temper, Cumming expressed that he can be easily read by “the tone of every word he uttered, his body language, (and) the energy he brought into a room.”…

" The story, continually told in the first person, keeps the reader always closely linked to the character. At times it is not clear exactly who is speaking, leaving the reader with a sense of uncertainty about the boundaries separating these characters from one another and from Shelley herself."…
