Lucid Dreaming In The Movie 'Inside Out'

The movie “Inside Out” is a children’s movie that is based on emotions and how we feel. There are a couple of scenes in particular that show dreams as if you are experiencing a movie. The first dream is when the main character Riley is dreaming of being at her new school in her underwear because she is afraid of her new school. Riley was having a dream based on what she was actually afraid of. What goes through our minds before we fall asleep, like Riley being scared of school, can affect what we dream at night (Dreams: Why do we dream?). If Riley was happy, she had good dreams; if she was sad, she had scary dreams. Even though this movie is a cartoon, it shows exactly what happens in real life. “Lucid dreaming is when you are aware that you are dreaming” (Powell, Jessica). When one lucid dreams, they are able to control the characters, narrative, and the environment of the dream. This type of dreaming can help put a stop to nightmares and can help us better understand our mental health. In 2006, a study was performed that showed lucid dreaming was a good therapy to nightmare frequency. Scientists can also use the information that they found from this study to try to understand hallucinations and delusions. There are certain exercises that one can perform to practice lucid dreaming. This kind of therapy is frequently used for a treatment of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). It is not important to be able to lucid dream; although, it has been said to be very exciting. Being able to lucid dream shows that we have better control over our minds. If we can not lucid dream, then we can at least try to figure out what our dreams mean. This means that we would begin to start dream interpretation. Some people think that whatever happens to us in our dreams means that it is either going to happen to us in real life. There is one type of dream where we fantasize about things that will probably never happen to us. This dream is called daydreaming, and everyone does it.
