Have you ever been aware of that you are dreaming when you are in dream? Maybe you do, but you don’t know the concept of lucid dreaming. A lucid dream is a vivid dream and people are aware of that they are in dream with waking consciousness. You can take control of yourself and surroundings. Lucid dreamers can train themselves to know that they are dreaming. With improved skills, they can even create what they want and they are like “God” in their dream. “The dream state can be experienced very vividly, and thus lucid dreams are often described as peak experiences or ‘high’ dreams”. Scientists investigated people from different ages and get many results and wrote the article Lucid Dreaming: An Aged-dependent Brain Dissociation. The authors are Ursula Voss, Clemens Frenzel, Judith Koppehele-gossel, and Allan Hobson. They are from departments of Psychology from Bonn University, Frankfurt University, and Harvard Medical School. The audiences are people who are interested in the field of lucid dreaming. The purpose of the article is conducting an experiment to find out how the lucid dreaming is related to people with different ages and the connection between lucid dreaming and brain maturation. The table and diagram contains numbers and lines so that they are really helpful for readers to understand the relationship between frequency of lucid dreaming and age. Data are collected through the experiment so that they are valid and convincing. The table and graph vividly illustrate the data that 360 paticipants out of 694 participants (51.87%) have experienced lucid dreaming. Among 19 years old paticipants, 75.08% paticipants have experienced lucid dreaming. It supports my idea that many people have experienced lucid dreaming. The frequency of lucid dreaming increases as the age increases. It shows a strong positive correlation between frequency of lucid dreaming and age because a person has been around longer; he or she is more likely to have had a lucid dream. Scientists discover that lucid dreaming can be used as a therapy to nightmares because dreamers can gain consciousness and ability to control the dream. Blagrove et al. found out that lucid dreaming could reduce nightmare suffering, even though the number of occurrence of nightmare didn’t vary. Lucid dreaming decreases the frequency of nightmares and also increases the quality of sleep. Even though scientists haven’t found out the exact factors that can explain why lucid dreaming is helpful to treat nightmares. Maybe people experiencing nightmares know that nightmares can be controlled after they know how to lucid dream. The importance of overcoming nightmares is that patients need to know the fact that lucid dreaming can change nightmares. Lucid dreaming is very effective to reduce the frequency of nightmares but scientist need more researches to get more information in order to form a solid conclusion.
