Like Pavarotti, Bocelli was born in Italy and began singing at an early age. He grew up on a farm in the Tuscany region of the country. When he was six years old, his parents encouraged him to take piano lessons. His musical gift soon carried over into other instruments like the flute and saxophone. It wasn't until he utilized his natural instrument, his voice, that the foundation for his musical success was constructed. In 1970, at the age of twelve, he won his first singing competition, yet there was plenty of room for improvement.
