If you were asked to name famous opera singers, you might only be able to name a few. Luciano Pavarotti, even after his death, is one of the most recognizable names in opera, and so is the name Andrea Bocelli, one of Pavarotti's good friends. How popular is Bocelli? Well, he did appear on Sesame Street and sang a song with Elmo, if that quantifies his popularity for you.

Like Pavarotti, Bocelli was born in Italy and began singing at an early age. He grew up on a farm in the Tuscany region of the country. When he was six years old, his parents encouraged him to take piano lessons. His musical gift soon carried over into other instruments like the flute and saxophone. It wasn't until he utilized his natural instrument, his voice, that the foundation for his musical success was constructed. In 1970, at the age of twelve, he won his first singing competition, yet there was plenty of room for improvement. He wished to take singing lessons with one of his heroes, a man named Franco Corelli. In order to pay for the lessons with Corelli, Andrea played the piano at local establishments, like piano bars and nightclubs. Towards the end of the same year, he experienced another unique and extremely rare opportunity when he was invited to sing in St. Peter's for the Pope. Soon after that, his career exploded and his albums began breaking records. In Germany, for example, a duet he sang with Sarah Brightman, Con te Partiro, became the best-selling single of all time. He later earned a place in the "Guinness Book for World Records," for holding first, second, and third places in the American classical music charts. To date, he has sold over 65 million records.
