Loyalty Theme In Beowulf

In Beowulf, there are themes in the story that helps grasp ahold of the reader’s attention. These themes would be loyalty, reputation/envy, and hospitality. All of these really help to drive the story along and get ideas on how it is going. The first theme is loyalty, this is a major and central one for the story even throughout the difficult journey. Beowulf faces that he is in need, and after joining with the Danes for reasons he is mostly overlooking on gaining a reputation and honor for his king in Geatland. But most of all, he owes a family debt to Hrothgar in the story. But finding out that Hrothgar had assistance with Beowulf’s father as well, for the reason of owing him. The history of both families date back to many years before Beowulf was called for help, when he was a child. Thus, Beowulf very honored and committed to lending his loyalty services to Hrothgar. To begin with, Beowulf is pretty much self-conscience on how people would look up to him and is seen. He soon introduces himself by acknowledging gained achievements for his king and himself. As when doing so, Unferth, drunken of his mind challenges Beowulf and pretty calls him out saying he is a fraud out of jealousy. Slurring his words around, putting Beowulf on the spot and verbally assaulting him. Of course, reputation for Beowulf is big for him, Unferth says harsh things such as him losing a swimming match. But, since this single theme is valuable, the quality endures after death, and is his own answer to immortality. This example can be seen when Beowulf leaves gold in the cave after killing Grendel’s mother, and go back with Grendel’s head instead. But after Unferth’s challenge, Beowulf defends his reputation with persuasion that he got his confidence of Hrothgar and all of the Danes.
