Loyalty In The Outsiders, By S. E.

What is loyalty? Loyalty means to be faithful to a certain someone or something. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, a group of friends must stick together when one member is forced to kill someone to protect his friend. This event then leads to a chain of new problems. In the book, Hinton emphasizes that loyalty is important because it allows a person to be able to trust the people close to them, along with the fact that loyalty is most often needed to allow two people to have a stable relationship.

One reason why loyalty is important is because its good to be able to rely on, and trust, certain people. This is because the loyalty between two people usually helps supply trust. On page 176 of The Outsiders Sodapop says, "We're all we have left. We ought to be able to stick together against everything. If we don’t have each other we don’t have anything." What Soda is trying to say in this quote, is that they should always stick with the people that they are close to, especially as they are going through rough times. On page 26 of the novel, Ponyboy says, "You take up for your buddies, no matter what they do. When you're in a gang you stick up for the members. If you don't stick up for them, stick together, it's not a gang anymore. It's a pack. A snarling, distrustful, bickering pack." What Ponyboy is trying to tell the readers through this quote, is that if there isn't loyalty and trust between a group or pair of friends, it is no longer a group of friends. It's just a group of people, maybe even a group of enemies. Because of this quote, the gang is loyal to each other throughout the entire book, even when they easily could have turned against each other. Because of their loyalty to each other, and their will to remain loyal to each other, they have a stable
