Loyalty In The Kite Runner

Decent Essays
Loyalty is an important part of each and every relationship. This quality can be found in any good relationship whether it be involving lovers, siblings, family, friends, and any others. Early on in Khaled Hosseini's novel The Kite Runner loyalty is discovered to be a main theme between the two brothers/friends Hassan and Amir. Adherence and protectiveness are shown by a mistreated young boy named Hassan. Hassan is similar to a dog because both are intelligent and loyal. To begin with, Hassan and a dog are both similar because of their intelligence. For Hassan this quality is shown through his ability to counteract the plot line of the story that Amir has written. ""Well," he said "if I may ask, why did he ever have to feel sad to shed tears? …show more content…
It also becomes obvious then that his intelligence comes from within himself, anything from past experiences to common sense and the way he is able to understand various things. Amir's inner voice keeps telling him that Hassan is just a Hazara, someone of lower class, who does not know anything and does not even go to school. Hassan proves Amir wrong as he (fairly early in the novel) shows his way of thinking and points out the flaw in the story that Amir has so proudly written. Just as Hassan has shown Amir his intelligence, a dog can has the ability to do the same with his/her owners. According to online …show more content…
This is shown through their ability to understand (by themselves and through training) the situation that is taking place. For example, after training, if the dog's owner has asked it to 'sit' or 'stay' the dog is able to easily comprehend what is being asked of them, therefore do as they are told. A dog's intelligence can also be shown through police dogs. These dogs are trained to help in many ways. They use their senses and track specific smells to find suspects, bodies, etc. Dogs can also be trained to be guide dogs and help humans with disabilities. These animals are able to use their own intellect as well as what they are thought to listen to their owners as well as help society. While Hassan shows his brainpower through his ability to point out the hole in Amir's story, a dog shows it's cleverness through understanding its owner's commands. Next, Hassan and a dog are alike because both are loyal to their owners and family. Hassan shows his loyalty through his act of standing up to the neighbourhood bullies while they were about to harm Amir. "Hassan held the slingshot pointed directly at Assef's face. His hand trembled with the strain of the pulled elastic band and beads of sweat had erupted on his brow" (Hosseini 45). Very early on in the novel we start to see and feel Hassan's loyalty towards Amir, it is never lost no matter how much Amir wrongs him. It appears that whatever happens Hassan is always by Amir`s side to protect,

After repeatedly scapegoating Hassan, Amir is given a chance to redeem himself in the form of Sohrab, Hassan’s son. This is important because it gives Amir a chance to step into Hassan’s shoe and make up for all the wrong he has done to Hassan. In his quest for redemption, he is provided with a situation where he can act like Hassan would if he were in his place and directly perform an action that Hassan would have wanted. All of this because of his deep connection to Hassan, as proven by their relationship as foils. The proof comes in the final pages of the book when Amir repeats what Hassan said to him before he was raped by Assef, “for you, a thousand times over”, to his son Sohrab.…
