Loyalty In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini

If you look up the definition of loyalty, it will tell you that it means the state or quality of being loyal. But it means so much more than that. To be loyal means to stay by the person’s side, through thick and thin, to support and to stay faithful. It means not running away when things get tough or scary. A loyal person is someone who will always have your back, someone who you could trust your deepest secrets with. In the novel, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, the characters loyalties are constantly being tested, but where there are no loyalties there is betrayal.

But he is not alone. He was being beaten and held down by Assef and his cronies. Hassan was held down to the ground helpless while Assef raped him. Amir merely just watched him get raped. He didn’t do anything to try to help his friend, a friend that was always devoted and loyal to him. So why didn’t Amir try to save him? Maybe it was because Amir was a coward. He would always leave other people to fight his own battles. Amir reasons to himself that he let Hassan get raped because it was the price to pay for the attention of his father. Hassan long forgave Amir on his betrayals. He spoke greatly of Amir to his son. However, Amir never forgave himself on what he let happen. In Rahim’s letter to Amir, he says “God will forgive…Forgive your father if you can. Forgive me if you wish. But, most important, forgive yourself” (Hosseini, pg 302). The only way to have complete forgiveness is to forgive yourself first. Only then can you have peace. Adopting Sohrab was Amir’s step at forgiving himself. Beating your self up about it wont change the situation. Learn from your mistake, make it right, and learn to forgive
