Heros of Their Time The idea of heroic action and an epic hero have been evolving for many years. Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight both have different, but also similar ideas of what it takes to be a hero. The heroic traits they share are loyalty to their lords, and they also are both knights. They more or less follow a certain code of honor that they must upheld.The difference of the time period and religion influence has very much so do with it with how they are portrayed as heroes. Beowulf setting was in the early medieval period where religion wasn't as prominent as it was in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Gawain shows his loyalty to the crown multiple of times. He showed his loyalty when he volunteer for King Arthur, “If you, noble lord,’ said Gawain to the king, ‘let me rise from this bench and stand with you there, to move from this table without giving offence”. He was the only Knight to offer himself to the King Arthur and thats shows enormous courage to do so. He would have gave up his life for his lord and that pure definition of loyalty. His belief in God saves him in his journey to fulfill his oath to the Green Knight. He prays to God to help him by a place where he can hear Mass and Martin. By believing in God, he is following the rule of his lord and also the church. God has helped him by showing him the nearby castle and giving faith on his powers. Another thing that makes Gawin a hero is his personality. He is describes as, “The fifth five virtues that Gawin maintained were generosity and sympathy first of all, chastity and courtesy which he never failed in, and above all compassion.” All of these characteristics make him a fine person and will help in the future with his journey. He had a set of morals and belief that can be traced back to his religious belief. Gawin heroic manner wasn’t uncommon in his time period.
