Loyalty is a quality which is found mainly among the bravest and most passionate characters. In the epic poem, The Odyssey by Homer, loyalty is crucial for the husband and wife separated by battle to amass their continuous, prolonged love. Odysseus and Penelope are put through countless trials that truly test their loyalty. Odysseus, having women transfixed upon him, struggles with desire, longing to be both intimate with a woman again and to return home. Penelope, however, faces a very different struggle. Pressured by all around her to remarry, Penelope knows truly that Odysseus is not gone forever, and must keep her loyalty to him through all contention. Odysseus and Penelope display through example, that loyalty can be a difficult promise
