Loyalty
Loyalty is the most common theme that Beowulf, Lanval, Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, and Chaucer share. For example, loyalty to their kingdom, king, love, or themselves. Being loyal could be selflessness, protection, and allegiance. Characters within these stories, not just the main ones, do something in the stories that show these qualities.
Beowulf shows selflessness when he decides to go to Hrothgar to help him out with his Grendel situation. Another part was when he decided to go kill Grendel’s mother even when he didn’t need to because he already did what he came for and when he returns home. Beowulf became what he wanted, he became a king. After years of ruling a dragon terrorizes his kingdom and instead of him sending a younger person to defeat he does it himself. The accusations caused him to be put to trial and the only way to get out of it is to bring this love his claims to be the most beautiful women ever. However, he refused to bring her to testify for him to prove to everybody that she exist even when his life was on the line. By Lanval doing this it shows he’s selfless. King Arthur didn’t want to start the festivities until the knight comes in and interrupts. However, what made this knight special was he was all green. The knight came in to challenge his court. According to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, being a good knight is made difficult by the strong pull of earthly and bodily desire coupled with pride. Sir Gawain is not just tempted because of the loveliness of Sir Bertilak's wife; he is tempted by his own desire to live above all else. Although Gawain constantly refers to duty and to the need to render his fate to God, he does not put his trust completely in his faith because he takes the girdle out of fear that he will not actually be protected by God. Gawain remarks "if only we could love our ladies without believing their lies" (2420-21), but he lies to Sir Bertilak. His sin is love of his own life above duty and loyalty.…

However, prior to accepting the Green Knight’s challenge, Gawain and his fellow knights refuse the call. The speaker states, “Therefore were the gallant knights slow to answer, and gazed astounded, and sat stone still in a deep silence through that goodly hall, as if a slumber were fallen upon them.” Gawain refuses the call by not immediately accepting the challenge and preventing the Green Knight from ridiculing Camelot.
