Loyalty In Animal Farm

Furthermore, each literary work employs characters to illustrate loyalty. Orwell and Twain demonstrate this trait in various ways and the first way is through individuals who are loyal to society. Animal Farm is quick to symbolize this type of loyalty through the horse Boxer who is one of the first characters introduced and one of the characters that are most thoroughly described. His main characteristic is fervent devotion and it is clearly demonstrated when he injures himself but as soon as “his hoof had healed up, [he] worked harder than ever” (Orwell 120). Even though he may have a gruelling task ahead of him and his injuries are numerous, Boxer always sticks to the new government based on Animalism through thick and thin and works tirelessly to fulfil his role and more, proving his devotion. Orwell does this through the character Napoleon who clearly only thinks of himself by taking control of Animal Farm and changing all of the rules of Animalism to conform to his ideals. He shows no loyalty to anyone else or any other code of conduct proving that he can only be loyal to himself. In similar fashion, the character Huckleberry Finn also stands true to himself and a shining example of his loyalty is when he is contemplating turning in his friend, Jim, who is a runaway slave but decides against it saying, “All right, then I’ll go to hell” (Twain 214). Even though Huck understands the risks involved with helping Jim to freedom, he decides to stay with him and see the journey through and decides that this cause is worth going to purgatory for. He does this not only out of respect and love for Jim, but because it is within his rules to never go back on his promises and staying true and loyal to himself is much more important than devotion to
