Being a first year teacher you are exposed to many different styles of leadership you have never seen before. As a first year teacher at Lowrey Middle School I am trying to understand the direction school leaders are taking in trying to make the school an effective school on different levels. Furthermore I will try to assess three different categories to help gain some background of the school and the path in which it is going. Decision-making, systematic planning, and evidence of a learning community at the school site I am currently at is what I will be researching and trying to gain more information about. While conducting this research I understand being a first year teacher and not teaching at the school for more then one full school …show more content…
To understand the decision making process in a school setting one must examine the classical models. The Maier Model, which talks about how, a decision is first and foremost of high quality and secondly it addresses if team members will support and most importantly accept it. When looking at this theory in depth we see that it is critical for the team members and stakeholders to accept and implement the decisions. If the school principal is doing everything he or she could but does not have the staffs commitment then he or she will have a difficult task in front of them. This could be really hard if a teacher has been in the school for a long time and there is a new school principal who would like change. At Lowrey Middle School right now I feel there is an issue when coming to decision-making in certain aspects including the situation I mentioned above. There are some teachers that do not necessary want change or are willing to take ideas because they have been doing things for a certain way for so long. I have seen situations were teachers in front of others spoken about a decision that came from the school leadership because it doesn’t fit the way they …show more content…
There are many different categories to look at to be able to see if the organization is moving in the right direction and that it is a learning community. In the executive summary it is said,” Leadership is designed in a fashion that promotes and encourages a cohesive decision- making learning community.”(Younes 2013) It is also important that the community is supportive and believes in the school. It will increase the positivity of the environment day in and day out. In the school I am at there are many different stakeholders that need to be involved to help facilitate learning community including the staff, students, administration, parents and the community. Staff and administration work together to come up with important goals and to help bring better ideas because each one person has a certain set of way. Furthermore there is a sense of comfort between different all stakeholders. There is also a sense of community involved in the school site, which includes neighborhood outreach and recommendations of former parents and neighbors. In a learning community there is also a sense of safety between different stakeholders in the school setting. At Lowrey Middle School for the most part there is a sense of appreciation and support for every person on the spectrum. This helps with building a learning community and a respectful environment for all stakeholders and I

Kinder has had a tremendous impact on how the Greenville School District operates, before he was hired as a district administrator the schools culture was organized in a traditional top-down autocratic leadership style. The previous administrator made all the decisions with little to no input from the professional staff, parents or community stakeholders. The culture was one of employee disconnect with low rates of job satisfaction, high rates of professional absence and large numbers of employment turn-over each year. Under Mr. Kinder’s tenure the district has initiated professional learning community policies and he has worked hard to establish the collaborative culture now in found within the district. Teachers are not simply told what will be done, but rather they are the ones making the plans and implementing changes from within.…

“Before making any decision or attempting to bring about any change, effective principals ask themselves one central question: ‘What will my best teachers think” (Whitaker, 2009)? As part of the decision-making process, great principals should ask themselves: What is the purpose of this, will this actually accomplish the purpose, and how will the most positive and productive people feel about this? Making teachers feel a part of the decision-making process is very beneficial and very important. When principals discuss their ideas with staff members, they become more accepting toward the implementation of change (Whitaker, 2009). Effective principals have the confidence to seek input in advance from staff members and feedback after implementation.…

As an educational leader it is critical to understand that all students have the opportunity to learn, and there is a tremendous growth opportunity due to the descriptive nature at the school. While the achievement scores show underperformance, an administrator with integrity could offer the support to grow a young staff with high morale. Thus, the climate at the school is primed for an increase in capacity and through a strategic plan and development of the teacher and community, the school could be developed to grow learning of students. Student learning is more data driven and administrators have more workloads and responsibilities. The article addressed the problem with school leaders managing funding and policy changes. The need for shared leadership among teachers and staff is increasing do to the lack of time allowed for the administration to focus solely on data driven learning. Allowing collaboration among colleagues such as PLCs, RTI, and classroom teachers using administrative directed protocol can promote an acceptance of changes because all parties have the opportunity to analyze the data and discuss where the need for change is necessary.…

What does it mean to be a part of a school community?well I think being a part of a school community means that I can feel secure and welcome. I think that a school community truly cares about the students education and what’s happening in their lives. Just like being apart of any other community,I think that being part of a school community means wanting the best for each other and when times are tough we can “lean” on one another. For people who work in the school community like teachers who help kids academically or mentors and counselors who help kids through their individual problems make an impact because they’re helping kids achieve a good education for the future and helping them with any problems along the way.…

It is not enough to have principals and a staff that buy into your vision; you must have the entire school and community on board in order for goals to be reached. I want to work with my teachers, not be a manager of my staff. I like the idea of leadership teams who work with me, and the other administrators, to decide how decisions will be made. I understand that there will be times when I have to make a decision on my own, but when possible, I think it is better to have the stakeholders give their opinions. Having said that, I also know that it is my duty to do what is best for the school as a whole, even if that decision is not popular in nature.…

An effective school leader should possess skills such as creativity, implementation, evaluation, and excellent communication. I conducted an interview with Tamara Perez, who is currently a director at Smart Starts Preschool. She has an A.A. degree in Early Childhood Education, Staff Credentials, Director Credentials, and has been teaching for 12 years. Becoming a teacher was not exactly what she had in mind. She was going through a rough time in her life and she began working as a teacher.…

To reflect on the many theories, strategies, and planning processes discussed throughout this course, one section particularly stood out to me. The 21 responsibilities of the school leader presented in the Marzano book provided some insights into frequently occurring responsibilities of the school leader. As stated in the book, the “wide array of behaviors explains why it is so difficult to be an effective school leader. (Marzano , Waters, & McNulty, 2005, pg. 41).…

teachers ' motivation and service toward their students. Advancements in teaching quality and the level of self-assurance in teachers makes them more willing to take responsibilities upon themselves and to not feel fear of taking the initiative in introducing new styles of teaching and other new ways of imparting knowledge to students . Hindrances that Impede the Growth of Teacher Leaders Boles (1992) discovered from their research that when teachers felt that their abilities and skills and educational experience were ignored, they found it harder to exercise leadership not only in the school as a whole, but also in the classroom. Little (1995) backed up this view by showing that in order for a school to implement teachers as leaders, the management of the school must be willing to extend real power to teachers in their roles as leaders and not only give titles with no duties or authority to carry them out. Little (1995) established that teacher-leadership could only really find success when management was willing to give up some of their authority to teachers so they could actually engage making their ideas known and seeing many of their concepts implemented into the overall functioning of the school.…
