Increasing College Tuition Essay

Today, most students will grumble and whine about the costliness of college, but their complaints are completely justifiable. Over the past decade, tuition fees have risen over 80 percent, and that isn’t all. College textbooks have also become more expensive, increasing over 79 percent in a matter of a decade (Kurtzleben, 2013). With the cost of college slowly increasing, how is the average student expected to pay for college without using more loans than needed? The solution is to lower tuition, which many people advocate. This will encourage students and allow more people from low-income families to go to college. Not only that, but graduating students would not need to spend their next 10-20 years paying off thousands of dollars in debt. In fact, 75 percent of families say that college is too expensive (Morgan, 2012). Even with grants and loans, a middle-class student may still not be able to pay for college. The situation is even worse for students from low-income families. Their parents would get frightened over the thought of taking out loans and the student would drop/opt out of higher education to be part of the workforce. If the student did continue school, they would have to take on multiple jobs while balancing school, extracurricular activities, and family matters. Although they would probably be able to pay for their tuition, a student shouldn’t be worrying about paying for college; instead, they should be worrying about getting good grades in school. If the cost of college were lower, students would be less stressed about balancing work and maintaining their grades at the same time.
